A friend ended up with this in a box of random leftovers from a school's rummage sale fundraiser.

It's aluminum, well made - the size of a pen.

The bottom part - which is where the pen tip would be is a cover which is screwed on. Removing it reveals a think aluminum shaft. Inside that shaft is a thin black rod - feels like a plastic with a brass mushroom tip on the end. Depressing the button on the top - which would click the pen into place if it were a pen - simply pushes the black rod and its brass tip just a little ways out of the aluminum shaft. The button is spring loaded so constant pressure is required to keep the brass tip extended. Both the button assembly and the cap have a rubber o-ring which makes a seal when the are attached. With the cap on the device looks fluid proof.

I am utterly and completely stumped. Help me out friends.
