No, it's not a :supergay: thing, but it may be generational!

How many of you have one in the tool box? I've cleared out a fair number of boxes I bought this past spring & summer and every one of them had a nail file in it. I've had one in mine also for ages, but I've upgraded to the diamond dust types, even though I have small "real" files for the purpose.

If you younger guys don't get why it's handy, it will come up I'm sure! :D

Pictured on the bottom in the latest one I found on Sat. the black handled one is the one I use, and a couple of other "real files, for comparison.

Last year outlaw i moved my aging Mom into an assisted care facility and when moving and packing boxes, she had dozens of the metal ones.

With the advent of fake nails and now the currently high popularity of them due to the "manni-peddi" craze, nail files have fallen to the way side. Can't file something that doesn't really grow.

I;ve got dozens in the tool drawer and a few in the medicine chest. Hair and nail Salons use to have thier name and phone number imprinted on them much like 6-in-1's at the hdwre store.

It's just another tool that always finds a use when you least expect it.

Due to cost, most of the girls I know know use cheap emery boards to file nails.
Well...those that haven't gone "fake". LOLOLOL

I have also found them in old collections very frequently, usually in association with elderly mixed sets of needle/swiss files or with ignition files and related tools. Generally tip and teeth are both damaged, presumably the impetus that led to the purchase of real files. I think the nail file remained there because the alleged perp did not dare slip the filthy and mangled nail file back into his wife's kit...
Nail files are nearly worhtless for actual nail cleaning with the 80-year old crud I work with. Hand cleaner and a little brush for me.

not only nail files...those little compact things with the mirrors in them, those are great to have around...not nearly worth what the wife pays for them but handy none the less.

Yeah I've been known to borrow SWMBO's compact mirror on occasion, usually to see behind stereo gear for connections where the typical Mechanic's mirror on a stick is at a dissadvantage...

I always keep bits of mirror handy to see whyinhell my eye suddenly hurts...I've also used mirrors when something painful gets into a shoe and burrows into my foot.

I'm 25 and have several of them in my tool boxes. I guess I learned from my Dad and Grandpa though. Can be extremely handy and they've always been plentiful around the house. My wife has gone the fake route as well now too so they have been getting few and far between now.

Not only nail files, but knitting needles, large sewing needles, crochet hooks in several sizes, and seam rippers. Nothing like a seam ripper to cut wire harness lacing in tight spots in electronic gear. Crochet hooks come in real handy for hooking tiny springs, fishing small wires, and fishing the lacing cord when re-tying harness. many other uses as need arises. ;)

 This is turning into quite the sewing circle! :lol_hitti

But I have to admit I did find a couple of crochet hooks in the last stack I bought; the guy did a bit of everything but was also hot and heavy into installing windshield/autoglass, and also had dozens of home made wire/spring steel and whatnot, as well as a lot of polished shaped wood pieces. no knitting needles (I have seen them in tool boxes however), but several cut down drumsticks.

ps: I do use SWMBO's sewing machine and rippers et. al. for making, modifying, repairing camping gear. I have my own set of heavy needles and a thimble for hand repairs, as well as iron on patch material (even in Camo!)

Hey, I keep a minty fresh and running 1960's era flip top Singer sewing machine in my home office. Picked up the sewer from my brother-in-laws folks that passed away a decade or so ago.

When not in use it acts as a nice computer holder/desk for the seldom used iMac and scanner.

Just another tool to fix things (soft goods and clothes) instead of throwing them out.

Cooking. Sewing. Fixing things. Dudes these days just don't know how to do jack. LOLOLOLOL.

Sadly, women are often worse. Hehehehehe.

I prefer the Cover Girl compact to some of the others, b/c of the larger size of the

mirror... I also keep nail files on hand, you never know when you will have to dress

points, or a relay, etc. Nail polish stays in the truck to identify those c/breakers that

should stay ON during household inactivity. And a sewing kit for finishing off whipings

when doing boat tie lines, and fly screen patches. Lipstick ??? haven't found a

bona fide use for that (yet) Perhaps if I lose my marker pen...

Hey, I've got one in my box. Worse yet, I'm not too proud to say that one day I would like to provide a home for my grandfathers industrial sewing machine. He hand sewed the sails for numerous racing boats he designed and built through the years, not to mention heavy canvas covers for any number of his tools. He also reupholstered his 1960 Ford F100. Did a pretty good job for a guy with no upholstery experience. :D
