Yep a standard framing nailer will shoot up to 3 1/2" nails for standard framing. Or the typical 2 3/8" for sheathing. Porter Cable makes a great model that shoots and toenails excellent and is usually priced at $150.

+1 on the Porter Cable! The nails for it are usually cheaper and easier to find in my area.

Hitachi NR83a2 Brother...got like 10 of them. Put a hook on it too...I have different style hooks, but if Dead-On tools still have them- that's a cool one too. yep...http://www.homedepot.com/p/Dead-On-Tools-Gun-Hook-DOGH/202332169#.UXHND8p3fNo

I like the Dead On hook, although it doesn't fold, and is somewhat bulky, you can use the hook to the left side to hang it on your bags while you are positioning materials etc..super convenient.

or the original folding hook... http://www.amazon.com/dp/B008A0O4XQ/?tag=atomicindus08-20

And one more thing...but used off CL...damn good gun that lasts forever, no need to but new. Make sure return spring is working and slide for nails is not bent.

Oil it up. Or, the NR90 that will accept the 3 1/2" nails, instead of 3 1/4"....but probably not needed. We bought those for LA County when they started mandating 3.5" nails. It's a good gun as well.

I'm using my framing nailer for plywood sheathing right now, shooting 2 3/8" nails as mentioned above.

I'm a homeowner, don't do it for a living, so I bought cheap..... Chicago Pneumatic gun from HF. I can replace it 3-4 times for the price of the big guy's guns. Still operates well after a whole house rehab and a fully framed and almost sheathed garage.

Hitachi NR83A2

I also used one of the Green and Black cool looking Hitachi's. It also performed excellent and toenailed better than many I have used. I don't know the model number. It worked great in the cold, I used it and abused it then returned it. I also have used the Porter Cable in the cold and it worked great also. Cold is about the harshest conditions. Either one you can't go wrong.

I ended up purchasing the Porter Cable finally and giving it some trials simply cuz I never tried a PC nailer. So I stuck with it cuz it did everything equal to the Hitachi but was $50-100 less.

PS: I just noticed the Hitachi is rated up to 3 1/4" nails while the Porter cable is 3 1/2" if it matters.

Too bad you're not in my area. I'd loan you my Hitachi framing nailer and give you a box of 16d sinkers that I'm tired of storing. Oh well, but then you wouldn't have such a great excuse to add to your tool collection.
