I have a 30x40 garage with cinder block stem wall 16" above grade with 2x6 studded walls sheathed in OSB. 6" concrete floor with concrete driveway along the entire front wall. I have a drainage issue to the side of the driveway that is causing water to wick up the front wall cinderblocks. I plan on fixing that issue this spring.

Now for the issue: I had a load of **** against the front wall of the garage and cleaned it out today. Along the seam between the block and slab there is a sizable pile of sand. They used sand under the slab when the shop was built 2 years ago. My thought is something is under there digging. Just not sure what or why.

My first thought is ants as we have plenty of fire ants around here. Thoughts?

I'm sure it's one of the concrete guys trying to get out. It should be fine in a few days.

You guys really want a picture of a pile of sand on the floor? I know this forum loves pictures, but we really are talking about a pile of sand on the floor. I already swept it up and dumped it in the trash.

I initially thought it was saw dust that had gathered from all of the woodworking I have been doing, but found it too heavy to be sawdust. I'm confident it is sand. It was piled along the seam of the wall and slab as if it was shoveled out of the seam (on a miniature level). It looked just like the sand piles I have seen along each side of the seams in the driveway (with ants pouring out).

I'm fairly confident it is ants, but I don't understand why they would be popping up in the garage. There is no food out there and it is detached from the house. My question was more along the lines of what other type of pest *MIGHT* it be? My concern is, considering the moisture issue, it might be a wood eating pest of some sort.

If it is sand coming up around seams in concrete, it is probably little Ants. There are some up here that seam to love the saw cuts in concrete. They leave little piles near their holes. I accidently spilled some Diesel Fuel in the Crack which accidently took care of the Ant problem! LOL!

Yup. Ants. They are very industrious little buggers.

IMHO, Ants have been known to move sand out of their nests and spread it on the surrounding surface of whatever.

As pointed out in Post #13, they don't tolerate Diesel spills.
