Looks a little like an air-powered spring compressor for old-style McPherson strut springs, or sumpin' like that.

the way the fingers flair out it has to be to spread something but specifically what is gunna be hard to guess without some help. is that a pair of alignment dowels on one of the forks? my guess would be to separate a case of some sort.

I think that is close enough.

It is a tire spreader, for spreading the beads while performing repairs.
I have no idea what time period it is from, but I am guessing at least as far back as 1940's.

It works good, too!

Aw com'on Stevo, less than 2 hours and you caved? At least my guess would have been right, I was reading through to see if anyone got it.

Age: I'd put it in the 60's myself. In the 40's/50's they had mechanical spreaders a lot. I always wanted one of the mechanical spreaders.
