Name That Toolbox

Greetings! First post here. I have outgrown my rubbermaid tub and am now looking for a decent first tool box to house my expanding collection of tools for wrenching on my old Porsche. My budget is $500. I have a deep seeded aversion to chinese exports, so I have been mostly looking for 20+ year old Snap-on, Mac, Matco, and the like. The following popped up on my local craigslist today for $250. Can anybody ID it? I've seen a tubular chrome handle like that before but can find any examples. Thanks!

It almost looks like an old Proto or Mac. Maybe even an older Matco. Either way, looks pretty good for $250.

That box doesn't look that great to me. The round handle you note on the side is the same as the round handle on the front. They look to be added by the PO to me. It is a style handle that can be bought in hardware stores in various sizes.

Also suspect is the large area given to a vertical divider between the left and right drawers. Also the same effect above the bottom drawer. Somebody should know what this case is by those features.

Is that the only pic in the ad? What size is it? How long? I also think you need to call the seller and see what he says.

It looks Chinese to me.

The seller says he doesn't know the make. I thought the silver things on the front were some kind of magnetic spirit levels but I could be wrong. The round tubular side handle looks identical to some 1980's Protos/Mac, but the pulls look different than anything I can find on google images. I also see what looks like a foot operated brake or something sticking out underneith. I may go see it tomorrow, but it's an hour drive so I just trying to figure out what I can. Thanks!

What are these silver bars ya'll speak of? I see bar locks. They fold on hinges and you slide a padlock through the top, thereby preventing the drawers from opening...

This is the closest thing I can find. Its a Kennedy. I've seen a few different drawer layouts, perhaps the one for sale was another option.

It's an early waterloo magnum series box's. They used the bottom full width drawers design and the side handle is a dead giveaway. Mac never used those drawer pulls on the mb1500 or mb1700. Matco never used a bottom full width drawers that I know of. Proto never made boxes, back then most were waterloo. While kennedy is a good guess, until the OP finds a kennedy serial number plate on it, I'm not bending from waterloo.

I just got a message from the seller. The dimensions are 45.5" wide, 38" high, 24" deep. Google shows a match in the Waterloo Magnum Plus, so it looks like bobcatdan is the unconfirmed winner.

24" depth is cool. I think I'm gonna go buy it if the drawers slide well. Any reason I should pass on it? Are replacement slides available for a box like this?

^ ^ That would be nice Waterloo box for $250 or even better if you negotiate price down !! ;)

Good luck, hope you get it.

It looks close to the Kennedy 4810RS (RS denotes red) in my 1992 catalog. But the one in the original post doesn't have doors, and the drawer depths look different.

Did Kennedy make boxes for Matco or Mac ? That might explain the similar look.

That's it!!! I know I've seen it before on here just couldn't remember exactly. I knew Mac used that drawer layout but couldn't find a 10 drawer config. I did have a Craftsman with that side handle too.
