ill start by saying im new to post here but not new to browsing, as i am addicted to this site and am on here all the time!

ok, so i am 19 and starting as a tech working in a garage with a friend of m dad, and working on building my tools with quality (preferably US made) tools, which leads me to ask if any of you guys can i.d. a ratchet to see what i have. I purchased a set of Bahco 1/2in SAE 12pt sockets a few years back from one of those wholesale "truck" sales, if anyone has been to one. in came with a 6in Klein extension and this ratchet but the only marking says "USA" on the shaft, and im not sure what the brand is. its a backup to my new snappy 80 tooth ratchet but id still like to know. Thanks!

I must disagree. That looks like a 3/8 ratchet with a 1/2 drive head. Wright is known for ratchet's of that style.

Does New Britain make Wright tools?

I always did like that design. It's a New Britain or Husky. The shape of the selector is the key. If it's a 45 tooth handle, you should be able to install either 3/8" drive or 1/2" drive head guts. It'll work with either as long as the tooth count for the head guts is correct for the handle.

Converting between the 3/4" drive and 1" drive New Britain size ratchets should work the same.

Its a New Britain sourced ratchet. Funny thing is it has a Husky handle and a New Britain selector. Probably 45 tooth, very reliable and good ratchet. BTW not a Wright ratchet. The New Britain design was an "update" to the SK design. All three ratchets are very good.

The selector knob and design of the handle mimic my (probably later-manufactured) Husky 20201 1/4" ratchet. The knob is dead-on, but your knurling seems to be nicer and finer than mine, plus, there's a thumbwheel under the selector on the Husky.

Definite similarities, though, and from what others have pointed out, yours might very well be a close ancestor of mine, which would possibly make us relatives (via our ******* too...err, 'sons.')

I have one very similar to the OP's, but it was made for MAC. I agree that the OP's ratchet is clearly a New Britain.

New Britain made a lot of ratchets under contract.

Haha thanks guys, yeah its a 45 tooth design i just forgot to add that in the post. its a good ratchet, very sturdy feel to it and i like using it. from what you guys are saying i can see how it could be mistaken for different manufacturers haha

Scout's absolutely correct about Challenger and Proto. While the round head ratchets were very similar in appearance, there was never a connection between New Brtain Machine Co. and Proto/Challenger (then under Ingersoll-Rand).

Came across this Proto/Challenger while browsing another thread this morning - sure looks New Britain-ish to me??? Would it be possible some Challenger stuff was made by NB shortly after they and Proto were both acquired by Stanley?

One way or another, there's either a lot of NB made ratchets under different brands, or close copies. I remember seeing photos of New Britain / Sparta / Mustang / Husky / Mac / Blackhawk / Matco / Challenger / Champion / (and possibly Proto branded as well, can't remember for sure on that).

We almost need a New Britain ratchet ID and part numbers thread...

Hi Matthew - I was fooled for a while too; they do look VERY similar, but trust me, the Challenger/Proto ratchets and the New Britain ratchet mechanisms are very different on the inside. Give me some time and I'll take some pics of the two mechanisms. BTW, both of them are my favorite all time ratchets. Thanks.

They are extremely similar but when you take them apart and look at them closely you are correct they are different ratchets.

Thanks, that's very interesting! Just curious, how close are the dimensions on the inner and outer diameters of the Proto to the NB?

BTW, anyone have an extra pawl to bring an NB 3/8" 45 tooth back to life? :)
