Name your quietest power tools

I have recently become more aware of the noise level most of my power tools make. How about comments, make and model number of power tools you own that you are especially impressed with how quiet they are. Include air tools too if you like. If I missed a previous post that specifically covers this I apologize. Air compressors and vaccuum cleaners seem to be covered well on the board when I did a search.

Thanks

The one with the dead battery.

Actually, my Ryobi drills are pretty quiet. I can do stuff in the house and it doesn't bother anyone.....until the bit starts to ratchet.

Noisiest 'was' my oil less air compressor. It bit the dust so I now have a real 2-stage 240Vac compressor. Much quieter.

Table saws? Before wood goes in.....pretty quiet (belt drive Ryobi).

Compound miter saw? Noisy. The sharper the blade, the quieter....up to a point.

my Dayton/Speedaire 2-stage 3-phase compressor runs at a crazy low pump rpm, (designed that way) and is so quiet you can have a conversation standing right next to it!

Baldor 1/2hp 8" 3 phase bench grinder, but as soon as the steel contacts the wheel, the quiet is done with.

Noise now bothers me as well. I have always been sensitive to noise, but could do construction work with miter saws and nailguns without ear pro. I also have some high frequency hearing loss, and the sensitivity can come with it. I think the 17 years of construction work has caused part of my loss, plus music that was louder than it should have been, car races, concerts, etc. My right ear has more loss, and I am right handed. I think my cordless impact drivers may have done some damage as they can be pretty noisy, and nail guns surely didn't help.

Quieter tools are good, but hearing protection is needed more than people think. My Miller 375 extreme plasma cutter is silent until you make a cut, and the fan will cycle. The air stream from the plasma is loud. The fan on demand is very nice. My mig and tig welder have fans that run whenever the power is on. It isn't really loud, but more annoying. My brother has the Miller 252 mig welder and the fan only runs when needed.

The bench top mill is quiet when drilling with twist bits, but with other operations it can get up there in noise. I had a craftsman 60 gallon 5hp oil less compressor. I gave it to my brother when I got a Sanborn oil bath type of the same size for free. The sanborn is pretty loud too (the motor may be bent a tad as I had to weld the base back on the motor when I got it), but it lives outside and is a lower pitch sound rather than the raped ape sound of the oil free type.

Power tools have to make a certain amount of noise to do the job, so I wouldn't expect to find any that are exceptionally quiet, but I am all ears, if there are some.

For a vacuum, my Rigid 6.0/14 is fairly quiet.

I have gotten into the habit of putting on the ear protection every time with every tool, including hammers.

I wish I had done it years ago. You young folks need to listen, seriously. Tinnitus is no fun.

mac aw1000 (i think)(same as the nirocat) Is the quietest impact I've ever owned, used or heard!
BALDOR 1/3 hp bench grinder is extremely quiet compared to any other grinder not badged BALDOR! It runs sooo smooth with little vibration.

My Shopsmith Mark 5 is quiet. In table saw mode many have commented on how quiet it is, the loudest noise the wind/air noise from the blade. In bandsaw mode I hear the radio without turning it up.

My recent deja vu is how quiet the Jet cast iron table saw at school is compared to my portable one at home.

My Bosch belt sander is reasonably quiet, but I still don the dead phones when I use it for extended periods.

Last hearing test showed I was getting pretty deaf in my right ear (***** shooting when I was a kid - 12 gauge going off next to my ear - I think).

Told the Doc that I was being a good boy and wearing hearing protection when mowing the lawn. He said "you should be wearing hearing protection when you vacuum!"

Got my attention - being careful and trying to save what I've got left.

My dad has one of those California air, air compressors. Its 2gal, runs at 500rpm, and its rated at like 50db.

I have a old CPU power supply that I modded to provide 12v DC @ 25amps. I installed a whisper 60mm fan in to it. That way when its under max draw, its still only 12db.

My hot glue gun to s pretty quite too :p

Jet jws 12 is really quiet...gotta be careful because it's running a 1/2" 3tpi blade that wouldn't be fun to bump into

Supposedly there is a constant background hum that is heard by only about 2% of the population.

Theories abound about it. Like that it is the military using ultra low frequency/long wave communications to talk with submarines. Or it could be that HAARP thing.

For battery operated hand tools, the brush-less motors are an order of magnitude quieter from my experience. We have a Milwaukee M28 angle grinder at work, I thought there was something wrong with it because it was so quite. Nope, just the brush-less motor.

I haven't held one yet, but Makita has a cordless hydraulic impact out that is 10 DBS below their current 18v brushless. It sounds like a drill with and added whir.

My Milwakee 5625-20 router is really quiet especially compared to a Porter Cable. Next would be my California air tools compressor. Lastly all my tools when I wear double hearing protection. I wear Radians custom mold under ear muffs that allow music. I can have everything on and no noise at all and no ear canal pain. Although dangerous when the wife sneaks up on me in the garage.

id say my quietest power tools are the guns god gave me..my arms:beer:

but i understand what youre asking.
corded elec tools like saws and grinders or cut off tools are always gonna be noisy.
the newish elec drivers aint as loud as an air driver or impact.
i guess your asking about pneumatic impact or chisel.
i wish i could give ya some name brands, but i can say from my shop the "truck" brands seem less loud than the other stuff.

but, after 30 years of punk rock & metal concerts my hearings shot to ****:rocker:

Nice lists guys. Maybe I will replace some of my worst offenders. One of my students brought in her Harbor Fright palm router so I could show her how to put the router bits in. That thing was about twice as loud as the school's Dewalt palm router. Plus the collet was undersized making it unusable.
