I want to print ~50 or 100 of small (say 1/2" x 2") stickers with my name and phone number that I can stick on tools that I use around other people.

I did this a couple years ago, but just had the nametags printed on regular (paper) labels, so the ink/paper rubs off when they are handled.

What's the right type of sticker to use so that they're more durable when handled? Vinyl?

I did this a few years ago and it worked great -- it won't deter thieves, but it really helps during job cleanup -- people tend to hand my stuff back to me when they see the sticker.

I used to get custom printing companies to print mine. I had my company logo, my name, and phone number. The size I chose was 1" x 2". They were about $ 100 for a couple hundred but they actually sell you the sheet. They were very durable and it took alot for the ink to wear off. They probably can use a vinyl that is almost indestructible.

I have some Avery 60506 Ultra Duty GHS Chemical Labels that we use to label bottles here at work. Claim Chemical and abrasion resistant, Waterproof, UV and tear resistant. These are for laser printers, which might be a problem in the home shop. At 2x2, you can cut, or maybe see if they have smaller ones with the same properties.

We used to have a few rolls of silver foil labels around our lab with the company name/address on them, and they seemed to be relatively durable. There are lots of online vendors who can supply these kinds of things for notalot. Here's one of many that show up on Google.

If you want considerably more durable, and more expensive, look for custom weather-resistant labels. Lots of those online too.
