Here is a cool link I found that shows live feeds of NASA TV. Right now, they are getting ready for this afternoon's launch of the Space Shuttle Discovery. The crew just got to the launch pad.

http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/

This will broadcast live feeds all day of what is going on during this mission, from launch, to space walks, press conferences, to landing.

Right click on the video and there is an option for 'Zoom' and 'full screen' for a bigger view.

God be with the Crew and its mission.

Enjoy.

There's also a NASA cable TV channel that often shows the same kind of stuff, along with documentaries and various other interesting things.

Some overcast here in Jacksonville too. Usually see the launch pretty well. Hope I can today.

Why does this have to be the last launch?

there's 2 more but I agree why trash this the airforce already has a smaller unmaned version that just spent close to a year in orbit. Can't convince me that we can not improve this 30 year old technolglie

There are two more shuttle missions to go. This is the last one for Shuttle Discovery.

We had overcast and missed it too. Had to watch on the net. And a coworker actually got tickets to be a guest of KSC to see it. I'm not talking with him now.

Here is link for NASA SkyWatch. Select your State and then City and it will tell you when you can actually see the Shuttle or the ISS (Space Station) flying overhead. In two days, they will link up and will be the brightest object flying overhead.

I like tracking the shuttle and ISS during the summer months. My boys and I will go out for a night swim in the pool and watch for the flyover. I think it's one of those things they will remember when they get older. I know I will.

Always good to see a good launch. I worked on/built all those turbo pumps that power the three main engines! Well, I did, until last year. Now they don't need any more.:(

Mmmm, incredible waste of money, for one??
Nothing new coming from it, for two....
so many other/better things to spend money on...:headscrat

But then why not spend Billions and Billions to send the same ships to do the same things for the 132nd time? :headscrat:bounce:

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Space Shuttle, or Space Transportation System (STS), is a reusable launch system and orbital spacecraft operated by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for human spaceflight missions. The system combines rocket launch, orbital spacecraft, and re-entry spaceplane with modular add-ons. The first of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981 leading to operational flights beginning in 1982, all launched from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. The system is scheduled to be retired from service in 2011 after 135 launches.

I would wager that something of value is learned with each mission, and there is no other way to learn it without sending people up there. Some things can't be automated or simulated.

Yes, not all missions need to be (or should be) manned, but sending people sells.

And there may be "better" ways of doing things than the NASA way, but there is already so much money invested in their infrastructure, duplicating it elsewhere makes no sense, either.

Keep in mind that we have seen how things go when for profit corporations run things. Commercial avaition and their maintenance outsourcing is a good example.

... says the Canadian that has invested exactly Jack Schitt into the American Space Program meanwhile has gladly reaped the benefits for over 50 years in ignorant bliss.

Tell you what, when Canada actually comes up with something better than hockey and ****** beer then you might have something to crow about. Until then, how about you keep your opinions on what other countries spend THEIR money own to yourself.

Easy now Daddy Dipshit! :spit: It's all about opinion here!:bounce:

I feel pretty good that while we haven't wasted a ton of bucks into the program, we have both built things for it (Canadarm anyone ;)) and supplied much of the engineering minds behind it.

As for the ****** beer - bet you can't say that after 3 of them!:lol_hitti

It's expensive, but there has been quite a few experiments done in space. And without space exploration, we wouldn't be where we are today without it. Heck, if you take just the satellites out of space, the world would basically come to a halt.

Think about this--If Edison had not invented the light bulb, we could be watching tv in the dark.

Hmm, can't think of one ****** Canadian beer. Can think of TONS of ****** American beers though.

Rather than have a ******* contest about which beer is better (which causes more *******), I prefer to post a link that shows some of the spinoffs from the space program.

http://www.thespaceplace.com/nasa/spinoffs.html

Even if it does cost a lot of money, it certainly helps satisfy the human need for discovery and adventure....

I guess if your someone who parks their **** on the couch all day Saturday and Sunday watching sports....NASA is not for you.....but then again, NASA made it possible for you to watch those 100+ channels of TV....

NASA is one of the few government programs I actually care for. It's ridiculous we went to the moon in 1969. Here we are in 2011 and man has never went any further than that.. That's just mind boggling to me. It's sad we won't see any further progress in our lifetime. At best we could maybe see a man on Mars 30+ years from now. At this rate though, it probably won't be an American..

I think hundreds/thousands of years from now when historians look back on the American civilization - putting a man on the moon will be viewed as the height of "America".

Some may think it's ridiculous to believe the lie that we actually made it through the radiation belt to the moon in an aluminum foil erector set lander in 1969. :)

But I guess as long as the russians believe it that's all that counts...

You do understand the meaning of the word "belt" ... yes? :headscrat

I assume your saying this because you mean a belt goes around something, and that you possibly infer they just flew in the top or bottom there for possibly getting the minimal transmission of radiation?

Nasa stated that the trajectory of the craft went thru the belt, and the construction of the craft could handle it..

I could care less, that's why I used :) and .. I don't believe nor dis-believe the landing was real or a hoax. I am holding judgement until it is either exposed or someone lands on it again. If 'tin foil' works maybe they will use it again, if they use some 6ft thick lead infused carbonfiber then maybe I will wonder?:dunno:
