I would love to have the cash spent on one of those pit boxes and it's contents. 'm willing to bet I could pay off my house, truck and bills and still have money left over...

Here is a couple pics of a pair that we just built. These have 3 flat screens per side and are loaded with 6 x-boxes inside. The side shelves hold steering wheel controllers so that fans can step up and play the newest nascar game on the xboxes in the chevy booth.

They were built for chevy racing and are actually out on the nascar tour and will be at 30 races this season. These were very costly to build and I can't imagine what some of the actual pit carts cost, not even considering the tools and accessories after they are built.

Those are great photos. Thanks for sharing them. I have been fascinated by this aspect of racing going back to CanAm and F1 racing in the late 1960's when it was common to see cars arrive on open trailers. Things have certainly evolved since then. I've often thought about the effort that must go into "redecorating" the equipment when teams add or change sponsors. It's got to be huge.

The costs are mind boggling. All we work on is the marketing side of things. We never even see the actual race setups. Deep pockets are required to be in the racing game.

The "old" boxes are used for testing, or pushed down to Nationwide, Truck, etc. teams. Sometimes they are sold. If you really want one, you can check out our used parts store (roush yates used parts), they can get their hands on most anything.

All this..overkill (for lack of a better description) reminds me of a previous life at a Toyota dealership:

IMG_1250.JPG

"I" drove this car, (the Red Bull car) at the dealership grand opening. I was the only one that fit the driver-esque profile, to fit in the window/car, to be able to move it.

The guy that "handled" the car told me, if I ran it out of gas, I had to push it back. Needless to say, I didn't go far. It was hard to figure out all the switches and controls and b.s. that is going on inside

Even though I don't like the whole go fast turn left mentality, it was pretty cool driving the car.

I am not sure of what you mean my "overkill", but have you ever been to a track where you have to bring everything you need? When we go to the track for testing you have to consider how much money is invested in the car, people, track fees, hauler, etc.. If you have to sit around because you do not have the right part or tool you will waste a ton of money. There is no running to the parts store or tool truck to get what you need:). Now to the reason they get all painted up and shinny is craftmanship, pride in your job, and putting on a good display for the sponsor. It appears to be working since we have this thread about the "war wagons".

While traveling I have seen pit boxes or war wagons at a place in Mooresville, NC http://www.2ndchanceraceparts.com/index.htm a look at their wedsite said that all they had are currently sold but if interested you might check back. Interesting place as they sell used and excess new NASCAR car parts, equipment and sometimes whole cars.

Yea, I worked just a few buildings down from them and did some business with them. Nice guys, they will let you walk around their back room and look at all the stuff. They have everything from, Crates FULL of springs, shocks, rims, brakes, to full cars. And last time I was in there they had a few pit boxes and lots of tools including welders, plasmas and hand tools. Ofcourse everything is used but its very cool.

Great photos. I enjoyed looking at all the detail in the different photos. THose guys have built a lot if things in that would make their job more efficient. I did see one thing that puzzled me.

I wonder if anyone can educate me on the jack stands with what appears to be a magnet on the side. I know there is a reason but I can't figure it out

How do they even move these pit boxes/wagons? Some of these look like they would need to be pulled with a small truck. Fully loaded with tools, parts, and monitors, I bet some of these have got to be weighing in close to a ton.

I've seen some that were actually electric driven with large 12v DC motors mounted in the bottom.

Most are pulled with a Tug (industrial golf-cart type thing), or modified golf cart. The same carts are used to haul small carts full of tires, fuel, etc.

I have a basic modified golf cart used for amateur and low-level pro road racing. Modified with a flat-bed in the back, slicks, and nice aluminum wheels. I've pulled cars around the paddock weighing a couple thousand pounds without any issue. (and unloaded, it will run 38 MPH!)

Regarding how they are moved, I've mostly seen the "brute force" method involving half a dozen crew members. There's probably not enough room for an army of golf carts on many of the pit lanes.

Interestingly, I've seen quite a few war wagons equipped with hydraulic brakes. There's a small brake fluid reservior on the T handle used to pull the wagon around, about the size of the reservior for a hydraulic clutch on a small car.

I guess getting it stopped ("wowed up" in NASCAR lingo) is harder than getting it moving!

I have a smaller, short track version in my shop. It was made using three Waterloo standard boxes.

If you (or anyone else) does it right, you'll only need ONE set of tools. That's the byproduct of a good pit box.

Now, I know that is just crazy talk to some of the folks on here, but for working on a race car, one box and knowing where everything is makes both good sense and saves time.
