I am building a garage 14 x 26, 8 foot walls. I will be installing a small (30 gal.) water heater and would like to know the proper venting. I would like to build any venting into the structure before it is finished. I also would like to avoid a power vent unit due to price nad replacement cost. Our house has an electric unit so I haven't had to learn about venting thus far. Not a plumber, not an electrician, not a carpenter, a mechanic who has done most of my own work on everything and feel like I am very experienced and comfortable with learnig how to do it right the first time.

Check out the I&M manual for the water heater model you're purchasing. You can typically find them online, and they will tell you the limitations, restrictions, terminations required.

Are you locating it out in the open or in a small room? If so, you'll need combustion air openings to the exterior. In the full space, assuming it's a relatively low BTU rating, you can probably just use the room air.

Are you bringing gas out to the space for any other reason? I ask because it seems like it would be easy enough to just do electric, and save yourself the additional cost.

Water heater (tank) regs and efficiencies have just changed as of 4/15. In the 30 gal size be careful buying a low boy. If it is preApril manuf you may have problems getting a replacement unit in the future as some have been dropped from manuf
