Does anyone have any info on these drill presses? I picked it up for a steal off facebook marketplace. I'm assuming it was cast under government contract for the training program. But by who? No other markings or anything on it outside of what's shown. Should make a good candidate for restoration.

I don't know the OEM, but in case you're not familiar, it dates to 1940 or 1941. The National Defense Training Program was initiated by the Office of Emergency Management, which became the War Production Board after we declared war on Japan in December 1941. During the Emergency period, even before we declared war, we were ramping up military production, military contracts, and converting plants into defense production. A major issue was the number of skilled technical workers. The training programs were run by state employment agencies under the auspices and guidance of the OEM in states with arsenals, defense production plants, and converted manufacturing defense production plants. The goal was to train farmers, farms hands, and in some cases white collar workers (e.g., clerks) to use machinery like that press. It would've been located in a vocational type school or converted municipal or state buildings or in some cases a facility in one of the plants itself. EDIT: I can try to dig up some documents if you want more than that.

I don;t know, but I would punch a fat kid to have one.

Thanks for that info, it's neat having a piece of history from the war effort. Especially something that still works!
