If you have a machinist tool chest with a National Lock Co. lock, key of 56-E-1 and on, would you please post an overhead picture of the key lying flat with its key number. I’m trying to develop the cutting patterns for this series for those that have lost their key.

Thanks much…….Ted

I recently acquired a Baker-Case machinist chest with a National 56 E-1 lock. If anybody has the matching key please post a pic for me. I'm trying to make my own and I've gotten close but there's a minor detail I can't quite figure out. Thanks in advance.

Hi Teufelshund,
Thanks for your message, I’d be glad to try to help with a 56-E-1 key. The -1 is one of the few keys that I don’t have the actual cutting dimensions for, yet. However, I do have a pretty good, logical, idea as to how it should be cut, with only 2 different possibilities. If we don’t figure out the problem, then I could cut the 2 different keys and mail them to you for trial and error., no charges.
First off though, please try to explain what kind of problems you’re having with your key. Also, when looking through the lock’s top rectangular hasp opening, do you see the top steel edge of the lock bolt plate against the lock’s backplate and then 1 or 2 top brass edges of the lever tumbler(s)? I'd also like you to attach a picture of the lock's key number.
If you can include 3 or 4 pictures of your chest, I’ll try to help define who the chest maker was.
I hope this isn’t too confusing. Good luck……Ted
