I purchased a used 45k btu natural gas heater for my garage. I have an uninsullate attic. I was thinking about venting it into the attic. Is there any reason not to?

Thanks Chad

DON'T DO IT!

I know in some places that actually used to be fairly common. However, do NOT even think of it. Vent it right.

Illegal. Plus, add that nasty stuff called " carbon monoxide" in the mix, for reasons not to just vent it in the attic.

x2 . . . . . . Do It Once . . Do It RIGHT !!! ;)

Here's nice How To Install vent through garage roof by Ron Hazelton at:

Only thing I'd like to MAKE SURE you do it put plenty of tar smeared on entire bottom outer edge of vent caps, etc that penetrate the roof. You want any nails to Go THROUGH tar on the underside to seal up any holes and also prevent driving rain to get up under the cap.

I just installed a furnace myself and am in the process of installing a gas line. You need type B vent through the roof or wall(only go through the wall if your appliances instructions allow it). Amerivent is a common brand carried at the big box stores, and if you go on their website, they have detailed instructions.

The B vent is ok through the roof, but not through the wall for heaters manufactured after 2013, as far as I can tell.

The code changed, requiring jacketed stainless for through the wall installations now.

Thanks for the help. So does the vent pipe need to run up hill at all times? I was thinking about running it out of the soffit but it sounds like out through the roof is ideal.

For $65-$85, buy a Duravent B-Vent Kit

It pretty complete and a nice kit for the price

Just need some sheet metal screws, some clear silicon, and roofing caulk

Find the owners/install manual for the heater you bought via google search and follow the venting requirements for that particular heater.

Thanks for everybodys help. I decided to sell the pd30 and I bought a mode hot dawg 75k unit. I also bought a B vent kit like suggested. I plan to install it this weekend and I will post pictures. Thanks for the help!

^ ^ ^ That's a BIG jump in Btu . . . . what is size of the garage ??

I'd recommend you put "some sort" of ceiling so all your heat doesn't go right up to the underside of roof.

720 sq ft. It has louvres on it. I cut all thread and I plan to hang it down from the ceiling about 8-10 inches.

Please don't do it. Do it right the first time it will save you in the long run.

For what its worth if you are going to heat garage and run vent outdoors insulate/vapor barrier the attic otherwise you are still at risk of condensation and mold unless you seal attic properly

Looks good

Before the 90 degree turn upwards, is there a 12" distance from the heater?

Is that 1/2" pipe?
