I have been using the stuff for at least 10 years. The trade name of my stuff is called Oclanosorb. Same stuff, different name. This stuff is amazingly effective for large oil spills. It takes about a quart of the stuff to absorb a gallon of oil.
This peat moss absorbant is the thing to use when you have an oil and water mixed spill. It wont absorb the water, only the oil. It floats on top of the water like oil does. And the stuff is fast too. It absorbs twice as much oil at half the time as clay absorbant.

One of the other features that I like about this absorbant is the ability to soak up oil that has coated non-horizontal surfaces. If you have a large leak down the side of a tank, don't wipe it up with endless towels, just throw some of this stuff against the leak. The peat moss sticks to it. After a day or two just take compressed air and blow off the coating. There will be almost no oil residue on the surface of the tank. Of course you can't do this unless you have fixed the leak first.

Some may say that I am environmentally reckless, but another nice feature is that you can burn the used absorbent in your wood burner, if you heat your shop that way.

The last benifit that I like is how light a bag of this stuff is. I would guess that this stuff weighs half as much as conventional clay absorbant.

The only disadvantage of the stuff is that it can be quite dusty to apply. I have found that it is best to place it on a spill and not pour it on.

I'm glad that this thread was started. I ordered 5, 55 gallon drums about 10 or so years ago. I'm down to one partial drum left. Now that I know that there is another supplier I won't be worrying that I can't find it when I need to get some more.

i used it once at autozone when some jackass tried to change his oil in our parking lot and it worked very well and if it wasnt so expensive id use it more often at the house

We use some stuff that is produced locally. Believe it or not, it is dried & recycled cow manure. It does not smell at all, has the consistency of peat moss

Looks like it is about $5 for a 4lb bag of it. Looks like there is a 20lb bag available, but couldn't find prices online.

If it's true that you can screen it out and reuse the dry portions of it, and that it takes alot less to absorb more oil, then it balances out. I don't know if anybody is going to take the time to screen out the product but I'd want to give it a try.

Most mechanics want a better absorbent than clay. (kitty litter) For over 25 years, I used clay in maintenance of agricultural and industrial equipment, while desiring a better oil absorbent. That is the primary reason I created and patented Nature's Broom.
In larger shops, absorbent will be "screened" over barrels to remove clumps
to resuse the absorbent and lower cost. Nature's Broom ability to "encapsulate" the oil have proven to save shops over 60% in total costs, when compared to clay.

Our armed forces are using Nature's Broom as an "sustainable" solution to meet their oil absorbent needs. Nature's Broom has proven to work faster, cost less and have sustainable traits. Nature's Broom has several of those abilities, but one of those traits is oil eating microbes. Those microbes will convert used motor oil into carbon dioxide and water in about 10 to 12 weeks. Heat, sunlight and moisture help speed up the bioremediation process and after conversion the remaining product can be used as a mulch or a fuel.

I know I'm a couple years late to the discussion, but can I just say how nice it is to see that other people hate kitty litter as a cleanup tool as much as I do?

I know it's been a couple years since this thread got any attention, but I figured I'd throw this question out there: are there any other new absorbent products that you all recommend looking into or stand by? I'm particularly interested if anyone's tested SpillFix yet - it's pretty new and while a few out of town friends say they like it I haven't heard anything or seen anything definitive on my end yet about this thing. Any thoughts, anyone?

I know this is an old thread that was bumped before, but I figured I would try again. I am almost out of this stuff and no one seems to carry it anymore. I am going to contact the manufacturer next week, but it looks like they want you to buy a 90 bag pallet. This stuff is so good, I may just do it. Anyone else know of another product that works like this or where it can be bought?
