I recently received a Military battle lantern. It has a sealed beam lamp and is powered by two of the old school lantern batteries. Has anyone converted one to LED with rechargeable batteries? This one still works but light output is very low, and I don't want to have to keep those big batteries around. What I'd love to do is convert it. I'd really love it if I could set it up to charge in a vehicle if possible. I'm a pretty capable guy but electrical stuff is probably my weakest discipline so please dumb down the answers (I won't be offended). If you could point me at specific products or at least specifications it would be great. I searched the web and only came up with very expensive kits. I'm sure GJ has someone who has done it with Amazon products!

How about a picture of it ? What type number bulb does it use now ?

Did you "google" it ?

I saw that kit but it is way more money than I wanted to spend. I thought it'd be a fun project. I don't know much about it. There is surprisingly little online about converting these other than the kit. I figured this would be something many people have tackled. I dont have a picture of mine but it looks just like this one.

Is the sealed beam the same size as an automotive headlamp? They make LED versions of those these days, maybe one could be adapted to your lantern.

Interesting thread!! I had a few of these when I was a kid. No idea what happened to them, but it would be fun to convert one to LED & a different power source...Just for nostalgia.
