This drill press came up for sale near me, $450. Ad says it's heavy duty, was on a navy ship, and "might need a little work".

I've been looking for a drill press for my garage, what am I looking at here?

(Only pic offered, and that's all that was in the description. )

I kinda looks like an Edlund. If it is, then they're massively heavy. Like nearly milling machine heavy. It might be worth it just in scrap value. It would be worth it to look. If it runs, see if they'll take less. If it doesn't, then $100, unless you're an aficionado.

When I was in the Navy, we had plenty of Drills aboard Ship. I do not remember them ever inviting the Press to watch! :)

The provenance is cool, but provenance don't drill any holes. It looks like some rough road, and for that price I would be expecting a "very good to excellent" condition machine. I am a bottom feeder by nature, so YMMV.

There are so many Deltas, Craftsman, Atlas, Walker Turners that turn up regularly on the sales sites for many less dollars that I wouldn't sniff at that one.

Good luck whatever your decision!

I think it looks interesting, but I'll pass on this one. Like CommanderCarry mentioned, I'm kinda looking for something that works-- that could use a good clean up and regular maintenance.

The romantic hills of central Umbria, Italy,
$450 and what it will cost to move it out of what looks like a basement, onto a truck, to your place, then offload it to wherever she's gonna sit...

Complete with surface rust and apparently abused paint. Add to (or actually subtract from) that you have no idea what power it has (or if it does, or if it's something like 600V, or 10 HP, or ??), what shape the quill and bearings are, what drives it, does it even have variable speeds, etc?

I'd offer him $200 for it (if I had a friend with a flatbed and a crane) and have a scrap yard on the hook to take it if (or when) it becomes a pig in a poke. Sorry, but honestly, it would be a hard pass for me.

Also depends what kind of drilling your anticipating doing. This beast will be best at large holes in steel. There have been times I've wanted a DP like that but the regular ones I have available have sufficed.
