I have been hesitating to start this thread as all the garages on here look so so well and I feel mine will resemble the long lost broke hobo cousin of most of them..I possess neither the talents of most of you good folk when it comes to making things or the finances currently available to spend on renovating this new garage in any other fashion than serviceable, so the idea is to get it a way I can live and work with for as little money as possible :)

the previous owner had collected up a lot of offcuts of wood so I am going to try recycle as much of that as I can in order to save some money and also...well to reuse it rather than it being binned

anyways here goes, this is my 5th workshop and possibly my smallest one over the past 20 years, currently we live in a 16th century farmhouse on the North Coast of Ireland and my current workshop is the old Georgian farmhouse with one of the floors removed.

long story short, my 3 year old son is starting school in September and we have decided to move from the farm into a house in the town where he will be attending school.

the new house has two small workshops running back to back behind it, only one of them has vehicular access, ( the one furthest away from the house), so my first priority was to cut a large hole between the two of them to gain access to the one closest to the house.

the garage runs approx. 64 feet long, 14 feet wide and 14feet tall on the high side and 12 feet tall on the low side, for the time being I will be concentrating on the one closest to the house.

my plan is to first clear out all the previous owners stuff that was left in it, then build a makeshift dividing wall and bench to divide it into 1/3 / 2/3

the reasoning behind this is that I wish to place a home gym in the 1/3 section closest to the house, and leave the back 2/3 to store my hot rod.

these pictures will give you an idea of what I'm starting with, ( I must note at this point that the whole building is completely on the piss with not a straight side in it), but its already built and appears to be water tight so its what I've got to work with.

cutting the access hole for vehicles, and then starting to remove some of the rafters to give me more headroom, none of them are load bearing, the previous person put them in, I'm guessing with the intention of flooring above them at some point.

final pics will give you some idea of the stuff I am clearing out in order to make the space I need

more clearing out, and started to work out how to detach the 20' long bench from the side wall

bench removed and chopped down to 9' wide to go across the width of the garage

planks that formed the top of the bench chopped down to fit the new top

2 x 4 uprights tied in to the rafter and starting to frame the door out

from the other side, more offcuts generated to get rid of now lol

door framed out, the door is a really cheap one that was laying in the garage when I got there so I am reusing it for the time being,

total spend so far, £27 / $35 on the 2x4s and the hinges for the door :)

Looks like a good start, and plenty of space for what you're looking to do. Look forward to seeing your creative reuse of all your offcut wood.

well the house and workshop move unfortunately didn't go to plan, both my wife and myself lost our best friends, she lost a friend she had worked with for 15 years and i lost one of my best friends, we also lost (presumed dead as well) our pet cat of 20 years shortly after our move.

as a result of this we ended up under massive pressure to move quickly, which is not how i had envisaged things working out, so, everything kinda of ended up just getting thrown into places where it will eventually live.

this past week at long last i have managed to get into the new workshop and start trying to sort everything out

progress thus far has included, sheeting out the "gym" side of the stud wall i fitted

getting all non essential stuff up into the rafters for the time being, (that will all get sorted later on at some point)

the door between the workshop and our new back yard never opened, so have got that working and operational at last

i have got most of my benches and cabinets into approximate positions

there was airline pre installed round the shop, but i want to reroute that and my father in law decided to start running the electrical conduit when i wasn't about one day, needless to say I am going to have to disassemble that and redo it was well as despite his good intentions he made a mess of it lol

anyways

i now have two defined areas in the shop, the workshop area and the area that will be my home / garage gym

some pics of the progress so far :)

looking from the newly operation back door of the workshop into our back yard

starting to get my old signs, license plates and boards on the walls

moving my garage gym equipment into the room ive made to house it

the gym side of my stud wall sheeted out and the wood sitting waiting to make my lifting platform and squat rack

sandbags, plates, kettlebells and some of the stuff for my electrcis patiently waiting on one of the benches still to be removed

compressor and cabinets down the shorter of the two long sides of the shop, at some point i want to build an enclosure for the compressor and put one of the cupboards either end and bench over the top

starting to get stuff up on thee walls and out of my way on the longer of the two long sides

tool cabinets now in place at the top end of the shorter of the two long sides the door the tall cabinet is covering is now boarded shut and no longer in use, the set of green drawers belonged to my grandfather, which i'm grateful to have saved before they were skipped after his passing

club banner up on the wall as well as my shop sign, home is where my banner and sign hangs :)

whiteboard also up and pillar drill in approximate placement, once i get everything set out properly where it is going to live i can then start bolting stuff down permanently, i had hoped to have the floors and electrics etc sorted prior to moving in, but best laid plans of mice and men eh lol

Looks good to me.....
What do you have to bolt down?
I have nothing in my shop and garage bolted down

hi

thanks, i've a long way to go yet :)

a few things once i'm happy with the layout, my pillar drill has a narrow base which is designed to be bolted down and also my squat rack in the gym section of the garage will be bolted down through the lifting platform into the concrete underneath for safety

also as i live in a highly built up residential area, our house is joined to our neighbours house by a single wall to give you an idea of proximity, i also want to bolt my compressor down in some sort of soundproofed box ( as best as possible while still allowing airflow), possibly using rubber mounts to try minimise noise impact on my neighbours.

also all i have several vises which i wish to bolt down once i have my benches configured in a way that i am happy with.

and finally again because i live in a built up town centre location, i want to bolt my big tool chest to something for security, purely to try make it harder for it to be stolen if the garage gets broken into, the rear, ( garage door end) of the garage opens directly into a shared alleyway which has quite a bit (for the area) of daily traffic, both people and vehicles

Looks great so far. It's going to be a nice garage.

thank you much appreciated

we have just bought a 47 Pontiac in MA as it happens, this is why I'm under pressure to get the garage sorted out sooner rather than later now as it'll be shipping outta the east coast to Ireland any day now.
