Neat Tool - Tenon Center

I just "discovered" a new tool that that I didn't know existed - tenon centers.

My project was putting new 2x6 decking on a 5'x8' trailer. The trailer already had 3/8" holes drilled in the frame that I wanted to use for the decking. I was worried about being able to accurately position the corresponding holes in the decking without having to make either hole significantly oversized.

I picked up a 10-pack of these at Woodcraft:


They a a 3/8" OD below the collar so they pop right in the holes in the frame:

I put two in each end of the frame, gave the 2x6 deck board a good whack, and voila:

I was able to accurately drill the holes in the lumber and everything lined up perfectly. I did one board at a time and worked my way down the deck:

Sorry if this is redundant or if you've seen this before but it was new to me.

ive been drilling them from underneath
or marking through with a sharpie

Thanks. I couldn't drill from underneath because the frame rail is C-channel. I tried using a small sharpie, but I was having trouble locating the center of the mark accurately.

You can also use a pointed type grub (set) screw when aligning a threaded hole with a part or material to be drilled.
