I would like some advice on Romex wire. If the outside jacket on a romex wire in nicked or even torn off in a small area is it ok to use good quality electrical tape and tape of the area that is exposed? The wires individual wires inside the romex are not damaged. Any input will be appreciated.

That's a good question. I'm not sure the NEC has anything to say about it one way or another, I've looked and can't find anything. This discussion on the Mike Holt forum suggests it's more of an issue with the UL rating of the cable itself, and/or the opinion of the AHJ (authority having jurisdiction, otherwise known as your local inspector.) http://forums.mikeholt.com/showthread.php?t=108342

the legalese of it is this, cable must be used as listed. listed cable is not torn. you may be able to find a heat shrink or other solution that is listed as repair for romex jacket. other than that i agree that its taped every day. i personally won't do it but many do.

The key really is "good quality tape". 3M "88" or one of the 3M "linerless" sealing tapes.
