Need a 6" Starrett/Athol Vice? Only $1400

RetDac: that vise is built like a tank and would work well in most any commercial or home shop. the seller is pretty optimistic on his asking price though. is there a question?

No doubt about the quality of those old Starrett/Athols. I just wondered what guys would think of the asking price. In comparison: MSRP for the Yost is $1112; the Wilton, $1940; and Columbian is $1530.

RetDac: personally i like the Starrett better than all the other ones you listed, but that's not saying it's a better vise. i think i saw NOS Starrett 6 inch vises selling on Ebay for $700 not too long ago so like i said his price is optimistic or unrealistic for lack of more descriptive words.

I expect you are right that the Starrett is basically a much better vise. It weighs ~50 lbs more than the Wilton which is the heaviest of the three I used for comparison. The way the jaw faces are attached seems better also. $1400 for one in that condition seems outlandish to me.

I think the price is ridiculous... plenty of great, old vises around that can be had for one tenth that price. When I come across someone on Craigslist asking even $500 for an old Colombian, I wanna give them an ear full... I tend to refrain, though.

$500 is probably where I might to be interested in this vise.

Considering that I paid a small fraction of his asking price for a Starrett 925 (5" Version)...

And that a new 926C is available on Ebay for $ 1,200.00...

And used ones pop up every so often for less than $ 500.00, he's a lunatic with that asking price...

It's a damn nice vice...but it ain't that nice!!!
