If I didn't have an opener I used a hammer, always worked.

We often simply drove a framing nail into wood, leaving about an inch protruding, bent the nail at a 45 degree angle, good to go...takes about 10 seconds.

I was quite impressed with the bent bolt being used like that. But I think I shall just stick to using the table of the drill press, one sharp dink and it the top is off.

I have always just set a pair of channel locks to the correct gap and used those.

I can't help but wonder why he keeps losing all of those openers, forcing him to make yet another one.
