since I'm not currently running a fullbore server at my home, and the internet connection is only so fast, I don't see a need for fiber. maybe another 30 yrs from now by which point I'll be too old to care

all it does is not show YOU the SSID. your devices are literally constantly asking "is XYZnet there?", even when you're not home with them. anywhere you've been with your phone could have a record of your home SSID.

turn it on, open your laptop, and look at the list of wifi networks. anything you've ever connected to will show up as available/in the logs on the pineapple. When your laptop/phone/tablet/wifi enabled dishwasher goes "are you there, XYZnet?" it says "Hi, I'm here!"

mac filtering can be spoofed easily. (my laptop can do it from the command line without any custom firmware or "hacking"). set up your wifi as standards compliant and use enterprise WPA2 or better if you want 'real' security, otherwise rotate a nice long passphrase occasionally. unless the NSA is outside in an unmarked van, they'll just get your data the easy way - from your ISP.

yeah, i've got libpcap and winpcap installed on the Windows box. and then there's the linux box.

as for getting data the easy way....first they have to find me. but before that they have to have a reason to be looking for me.

How did you get a wired Roku? Mine connects with wireless....and there isn't even a place to plug in an RJ45. It works flawlessly even with only a 10mbps connection

Thanks for the explanation CougarXR. Dangit... I thought I was going to get some free tv! I do have an attic antenna that pulls in a good local selection but it was a bit lacking in content, hence the spectrum lineup ( I like my hgtv, what can I say) .

it's only 100Mb/s. so if you've transcoded something the easy way - expanded it to a "raw" stream to add subtitles, then didn't recompress it, 100Mb/s may be inadequate. it's an edge case, but it does happen.

We switched out the old Fios system a while back --- new system has the modem ....main TV box and the slaves for the other TV's. To be fully wireless all the components need to be closer than they say ..... thankfully we are back in a house from the 90's with wires all over the place.

The crazy thing is I could not get a clear answer as to where the slave is getting it's information from --- is it coming from the modem or is the main box transmitting ... or both ?

Under ideal conditions the wireless TV is there .... I don't seem to have ideal

Since myself and a lot of other rural internet users are limited in providers, 100 mbs is adequate for many. The fastest I can get right now is 100 mbs but I don't need it and don't want to pay that much either.

Absolutely. I can get over 100 megabit anywhere in my house and stream 4k with no issues.

I have ethernet all over and use none of it.

Re-ask the question. Is it, "what is the best way to move Internet and TV thru my house from my provider," or is it "whether there are less expensive ways of getting Internet and TV?"

What I read in this thread is someone asks if Tony's Tacos makes good tacos, and 50 people dive in saying everything from have roast beef from The Beef House instead, or Italian from Roma's Italian House, to yeah the tacos are good but I like Indian food so eat that.
