Need a door open sensor switch...

I am looking to power a light when the man door is open. I can imagine a sensor mounted to the door and the frame of the door that sends a signal to power an outlet/cord when the door is open, but turns it off when the door is closed.

Can anyone steer me toward the right product? Thanks in advance.

You just need an indicator light, or are you looking for a bright light to illuminate the path?

Either way, a magnet on the door, with a reed switch on the frame will switch current to either a light or a relay for a bigger light. (Think "burglar alarm".)

I put a line voltage switch in the jamb by the hinges for a closet light. It was made for the purpose but it would not be easy to retrofit without opening up the wall. What Steve recommended would be fairly easy.

You could use a fan control center. It's a transformer and relay that mounts to a common electrical box. All the high voltage is enclosed and 24VAC is exposed.

Insteon (or many other smart home technologies) can do this - I’m just most familiar with Insteon.

Use one of these for the sensor:

As mentioned - with smart sensors and an outlet, this is pretty easy to do (completely wireless) - the senors I have, the battery lasts over 1.5 years... Some tech is involved in setting up "rules" that say "light on when door open".

Solution should consider if the signal ultimately winds up on the net.
The old way is a reed switch or magnetic switch set that will provide a hard contact.
Ultrasonic 'walk in, turn on' sensors have been around for sometime.
Photo IR sensors are another way.

Uses dry contact input, so any old normally closed alarm switch will work.
Door open, light on.
Door closed, light off.

Most Home Depot’s also stock what’s called a closet door light switch. It installs in the door jam and when the door is open the light turn On. Kinda like a pin switch for a hood of a car in a car alarm.
Like this one. And it’s cheap
