I need a good welding respirator that will actually fit under my welding helmet. I survived lung cancer and lost half of one lung and don't want to take the chance of going through that again. :shocking: So far I am looking at the Miller and 3M half mask models. Anyone have any suggestions or pros and cons they can share?

A "cheap" one that fits is better then an expensive one that leaks. To properly fit you need to start with being clean shaven, then (unless you have worn them before) you might have to buy 2 or 3 sizes/styles to get a good seal.

I've been preffesionally fitted, both with the scents and air pumps, to be able to fit myself and be confident it is correct. The last few times I've been able to get a good seal right off, but have had to swap sizes in the past. Get the most flexible material available and it will conform better.

I have a 3m quicklatch pro that is great, but bulky and haven't been able to find the cartridges in a while. I keep it tucked away as some day I will find the cartridges and use this as my everyday setup, but it is too big for under a mask.

The miller/3m half mask are pretty good, but the elastic ***** and is gone in mine from about 1 year use.

Oh and with your lung issues do you have reduced breathing? Might want to check with a Dr. Before using a respirator.

It does look bulky, does it interfere with the welding helmet?

I'm a retired hobbyist welder and won't have it on for long periods.
Doc's ok with it, he'd be more upset with if I didn't use one. Besides, I often see him at the gym and he had me running on the treadmill.

Sorry for the typos in my post, fat thumbs and slow phone lol.

Mine fits fine under my hood, if you're not used to it I could see it being a distraction or tight. Honestly after wearing various forms of dust and fume protection a good respirator is hand down the most comfortable for me.

I'll try to grab a pic if I'm in the shop tomorrow.

3M pro with pink p100 filters. The pro has a softer plastic, they just fit better. You can also take them apart to clean them as well.

How about a SAS air pump? More money but better imo.

I have the 3m pro, sas and 3m papr.

I also have a Copd, I don't take breathing safety lighty.

I have this one.

Says it fits under a hood, and being welding specific, you’d expect it to fit. At least with my head and my hood, you’d be wrong. It kinda fits, but can’t pull the hood all the way down.

So, would like something even lower profile.
