I have been on the look for a high count (low filler) tool box stuffer. Brand doesn't really matter my personal collection ranges from harbor freight to snap on and all function just fine. I would stock up on hf but not a fan of 12pt 3/8 which is all they seem to carry
Kobalt has the 300 piece set
Craftsman has a ultimate socket set 299 pieces and a 413 piece set.
It's for a job at a shop a family friend owns that requires personal tools since his past employees have stolen from him.
I just found out about the ultimate socket set yesterday and I don't want to regret missing a good set somewhere else.
Any info is appreciated

When you say no filler, what does that mean? Are you looking for sockets only? No ratchets or extensions? Budget?

Craftsman is probably your best bet. Search around and find the kit or kits that will work for you. Sometimes you can find the craftsman sets used with little to nothing missing. If you haappem to care some guys have even found older us made sets. Another option would be one of the used military kits guys have posted about. Third option would be finding someone’s used collection like when someone is retiring, changing careers, or getting divorced.

He wants a 300 piece set with 250 sockets, ratchets, wrenches, etc and 50 filler tools like Allen wrenches, bits, etc.

He doesn’t want a 300 piece set with 50 sockets, wrenches, etc and 250 filler tools.

Not knowing budget, I'd recommend piecing together Tekton sets...

Go to AMZN, lots to choose from.

1/4", 3/8", 1/2" socket sets
Metric and SAE wrench set
Screwdrivers
Pliers set
etc.

Piece together whatever you need. Mostly Taiwan COO, but some USA stuff (like the pliers).
Lifetime warranty and excellent customer service.

If budget allows, look at SK socket and wrench sets. Shop around for best price.

The 299 piece socket set is a lot of sockets I have been piecing one together for at least 5 years. If you don't want 12 point sockets I don't think the 299 is for you as more than 1/2 of the sockets in the set are 12 point. Look at the attached PDF's for a visual aid.

I have the tekton combo wrenches and love the fit and finish for the price around 80$ for sae and metric.
Bighead is spot on 100 Allen wrenches is ridiculous and most of the craftsman 3 drawer kits are nothing but filler. My old set I bought 6 years ago is around 350 piece and very little filler for 150$ but discontinued. I wasn't sure of tekton socket quality for the price hf seems fine but they skip and the 12pt thing i mentioned is ridiculous.
I'll have to give klutch a look as well all my personal tools are of pretty nice quality but I do alot of work at home so I hate to drag them all to a shop and have no tools

Piece it together on what you will use.

Sets of sockets to meet your needs and preferences and drive tools of whatever you really like.
Maybe more Tekton wrenches along with dupe items taken from the home box to offset costs.

Prepacked kits are always off for every buyer a little bit. One needs allen and not SAE, the next needs something different beyond the basics.

Mine was assembled of select brands each item based on experiences and zero ballast at the bottom. Not cheaper but in the long run a better kit.
