I'd like to buy a good vise. I'm looking for something a little older with a little character but ultimately, I'm looking for a good, heavy, well built piece of equipment that's going to serve me well. 4" jaws or wider. Look me up if you're looking to sell or have a good lead. Thanks!

Keep looking. Last evening on c-list, a Snap-On vise showed up for $40. I shot a priority e-mail, offering to be there with cash in hand immediately. Unfortunately, at the unbelievable bargain price of $40 for a mint S-O vise, I was the fifth e-mail within fifteen minutes of posting. Check c-list as often as possible, keep cash in pocket, the truck warmed and pointing down the driveway.

thnx, jack vines

Also when searching craigslist use the word VICE instead of VISE. Common mistake and will sometimes show different listings. Quite a few on Chicago c-list.

Guys,

Thanks for the adVICE! Using the word "vice" as opposed to vise has expanded my possibilities tremendously.

I scored a sweet Parker from Ebay for around $70... keep looking there.

Where you located? I need to get rid of at least one but I dont think you would want to pay shipping on a big one.

Shipping on this one wouldn't be too bad though.

Haha! I darn near spit my beer across the room when I saw that bitty thing. Looks like it could be awfully useful for the right project though. I'm not afraid to spend some money on the right vise. It would ship to Pittsburgh PA. Feel free to PM me if you've got anything specific in mind

All the more reason to put a location in the profile. 50 States in the US, a lot of Canadians, and a lot of people from across the drink. You might have someone right next door to you that has one.:)

Question for you guys and gals.....

The Starrett vises that I've looked at have Athol cast into the brand. Was Athol bought by Starrett at some point? If so, anybody know when?

Having gone to Lowes and playing with their Wiltons, the quality just isn't there IMO. Not nearly as smooth as either of the relics I have. For light light occasional use, it would probably be fine, but if you want something solid that can take a beating, take your time to find a quality older vise. I was really surprised with the Parker... and the price was so right. The Athol is quite nice too. :D:thumbup:
