Need a Hand Pump for Oil Drain

Well, guys...I'm going nuts trying to sort this out.

I have a John Dow Pit Crew 8 gallon oil drain. It has a 1 1/2" externally threaded spot with a screw on cap you remove to pour the oil out when it's full.

I'd like to get a pump that can attach to this threaded spout. I have found all sorts of pumps from Grainger, Northern, NAPA and even HF....but I don't know how to attach. You see, some say they fit a standard 3/4 or 2" bung...some say they fit a Rieke spout.....

It looks like it was made for such a thing...but I can't find one.

I'm wondering how I could best adapt to fit my oil drain. From the top of the threads to the bottom of the drain is about 11".

Any ideas?

You will need to use some pipe adapters in order to get a pump to fit the hole already in your tank. I looked at what McMaster Carr has available, they have a pump that fits a 2" female hole, using some pipe adapters you would be able to use that type, go here and look at 4266K11 and 4266K12. The suction tube is 1 3/8 OD, so this will fit thru the existing bung in your tank, it will work with tanks from 18 to 36" deep, if your is less, cut to fit. The outlet tube and be removed and a garden hose connection added if you wish. These pump will pump up to 40 weight oil.

Thanks! My only question is...since it says it has a 1 3/8" pipe...does this mean it's just pipe with no threads? Then, I need an adapter that "clamps" to this 1 3/8" pipe?

I understand the description as, the body of the pump has 2" male pipe threads, this would mount to the tank, in your case to adapters that mount to the tank. The suction tube has a 1 3/8 OD, no threads other than those holding the tube into the body of the pump. It just extends down into the liquid in the tank thru the 2" pipe hole. Most of these tubes are two pieces, one around the outside of the other with a couple of seals, you just pull it to match the depth needed.

Most of the pumps I am familiar with use a 3/4 pipe to the underside of the pump. There is a collar that threads in to the big hole on the barrel the pump slides through this and a set screw holds it at the depth you want.

I googled it and if your oil drain is the red poly one that came up, you could fairly easily rig a pipe to go in place of the funnel, I couldn't really see what the drain on the tank looked like.

The problem I see is these hand cranks put a lot of stress on a 55 gallon drum, I am not so sure how well they would work. When you start cranking it is top heavy and wanting to go side to side, the collar on mine I had to braze after I cracked it. Sitting up high on top of a long pipe/lever going into a poly tub on wheels, may be a handful. You could go low with a smallish one, but then you would either have to lift it up on something or get down on your knees and crank slow and easy.

You might want to look into something like those little drill operated pumps with two pieces of hose.

I have never used one so dont know how well they work, but variations of these are pretty popular with boaters who have to change their oil from the top.

Thanks for all the help guys...perhaps I should just pick the darned thing up and pour it out....but I figure that could be sloppy.

I do have a small pump with hoses, but it's a mess for this job.

Just to ensure I'm clear..a 2" bung female thread is really 2" female thread? Dumb question perhaps, but I want to make sure I can get the right bits to make one work should I go that route. (I suppose my concern is along the lines that a 2x4 isn't really 2x4...so I didn't want to assume that a 2" drum bung was really 2".)

A 2" bung is a 2" bung, you will need to make sure the inside diameter of the adapters is larger than 1 3/8 so the suction tube will pass thru.
