Need a M6x1.25x60 machine screw...

yes really. It's for a wooden bar stool. It screws into a threaded insert in the leg. There's eight of them, two per leg, one of the stools was loose and wobbly and I never sit in it so nobody told me. I went to snug it up and one of the machine screws snapped. Any ideas? It doesn't even seem that this thread is commercially available.

I also need a box of Class 8 M8 washers because I've used all but two in my assortment, and my best bet for those seems to be Ace Hardware at over 50 cents apiece? Fastenal appears to have closed all their walk in stores since the last time I bought anything from them.

If I remember correctly that is the thread used on "Mikuni" carburetor and throttle cable adjusters. At that length I doubt that a "motorcycle shop would have them, but possibly an easy place for you to check. I have that tap and or the die if my thread recollection was correct I needed it to connect the throttle pedal on a "Formula 440" car I flipped ($ not the wheels up) someone seen it and bought it before I even tried it out! So try an industrial supplier(s) for them or the tooling to "DIY" a solution. Penn Tool, is near (+/-) to you IIRC for a road trip or reasonable "mailorder" shipping(?). Harry

I already looked at McMaster, I figured I was going to have to **** it up and order from them, but no such luck, they have the same .75 and 1.0 thread pitches as my tap and die set.

this is just a cheap table and stool set that I got off Trash Nothing, but I don't want to have to find another... I could get a different threaded insert for the leg, but I'd probably have to order that too, unless Ace has them.

How did you go about measuring this to determine that is what you size you need?


Have you tried a regular 1/4"x20TPI bolt? 20 TPI and a 1.25 pitch are nearly identical (1.27 thread pitch is what 20TPI works out to). And 1/4" and 6mm are very close also...

I just went through all my random hardware. Anything I found M6 with a 1.25 pitch was very short, less that 15mm. It does appear that if the female threads are less than 6mm deep that a 1/4x20 should probably thread in OK. Otherwise, buy a short M6x1.25 and weld a 1/4x20 to make up the rest of it.

1/4-20 will not thread into 6mm. Been there tried that a long, long time ago. Maybe look for specialized furniture fasteners as opposed to standard hardware.

Easy to make with a lathe that'll thread metric or with a die. I've found that threaded inserts tend to be pretty hard so I don't think I would try retapping them, but if they are wooden legs, you should be able to back them out and redrill for a more common size unless they are super glued in. Wouldn't expect that on a commercial product though.

I just assumed that it was metric because it was made in Asia somewhere, I used the thread gauge in my tap and die set. No, I didn't have a 1.25 pitch tap. HOWEVER I did not think that an Asian made stool would use SAE sized hardware but anything's possible. And if the SAE bolt is close enough to work, that's an easy solution to an annoying problem. Gonna have to check that tonight.

Amazon Japan has taps for M6x1.25 but didn't see machine screws to match... (only looked at first page, you might find them with more searching)
