Need a new framing nailer

My trusty N80 nailer bit the dust a couple of years ago when some discontinued internal parts shattered while building a deck. I haven't had a need for one until recently now that I have a 1800sf basement to finish so I'm on the lookout for a new one.

Having been out of the trades for 20 years, I haven't really kept up on which brands are good for long term investments. I'm assuming any current Senco or Bostitch nailers are probably fine but which models do people use?

This isn't my old one, but mine was about this used and abused. Bought it back in the early 90s from a tool rental place.


Not really interested in battery or Paslode style guns, just pneumatic.

My Paslode died internally about a month ago, after 28 years of perfect service doing odd job and several fences and decks. When looking for new I read the reviews and there are some issues with most of the offerings, I ended up with the Milwaukee. It's ok but I was used to the Paslode and it feels a little clunky, hopefully I will get used to it with time. Hitachi was the next in line, but the store clerk talked me out of it.

I was out of the trade twice as long. I picked up a Bostich coil nailer . Coil nailers can do blocking. I got a Bostich on sale, the salesman asked what I was going to use it for, I told him a house and a garage. He said that it should last for that.

I bought a Dewalt from HD for $169. Just framed a finish basement, about 1000 nails, no issues at all. Nice gun.

Senco here... beast. Had to change the trigger to single pull ... kept double firing. Cut head... love it. Built three decks, one shed and a few other things...

I bought a used Paslode F350 on ebay for 100-120 and used the heck out of it. Nails are readily available at HD etc..

Bostich - I think N90?? I use it so seldom the last two times I had to replace several deteriorated plastic/rubber internal bits. So far, they're available and not expensive. And, yeah it works great (when not sitting for 5 years!!)

If I were buying new, I'd look carefully at the all-electric battery units. Assuming they have enough grunt, it looks to me like a step up from even Paslode.

The problem I have with battery powered is the same thing that you said in your first paragraph. Since I don't use it for a living, it will do a lot of sitting. I don't need another proprietary battery powered item sitting around for 2-3 years between projects. A well oiled pneumatic nailer should be good for 20 years or more of light use.

New Bostitch guns are junk. Bostitch will never get another penny of my money. I won't even buy their nails.

I'd recommend Hitachi or Paslode.

DeWalt all electric is pretty quiet. A click and a thunk.

Some fellas that really knew what they were doing used a pneumatic Ridgid 21 degree round-head framing nailer to install a 15 ft load bearing beam in my house as part of a remodel. It was high-speed....literally. They used it also to make quick work of enclosing two window openings. It had a magnesium housing and looked easy to manipulate one-handed. Really quiet too.

I picked up an 18g finish nailer for under $100
