Need a New Toolbox

The day has come, and I finally need to upgrade my tool box. Currently I am using a husky/craftsman 26 inch box.

I was thinking about purchasing a harbor freight 44 inch box, but I'm open to any suggestions. I'm not a professional technician, and I don't use this every day, but I'm not afraid to invest in quality tools.

I just recently bought a HF 26" box similar to that one. I also recently caught the tool buying bug and fear it may be full in short order. Probably should have sprung for a larger box. I'll be interested in seeing what other members recommend.

I just got a Harbor Fright 56 inch tool box for the outstanding price of $639.99 after discounts, to replace my old Craftsman 26 set like yours and I couldn't be more pleased with my decision. Its far and away a better and much bigger box than anything sears is offering, and 1/2 of what the cheapest used snap-on box is going for around here.

For home use, it's hard to argue with an HF box. Over Christmas i was at either Lowes or Home Depot and they had a pretty nice DeWalt 50 something inch combo that looked pretty nice from a drawer arrangement standpoint. There is always watching CL as a nice box may come along cheap.

Buy used off CL. There are soo many good deals, it just takes some time. I bought 2 separate awesome Mac boxes off CL for dirt cheap and they are far better than any big box store brand. Here's the bigger one I got for $500 with locking pry bar box and side shelf. I recently added a Husky side box for $75 also off CL. The other box is also a Mac with Craftsman top I picked up for $250 with Matco spray can holder.

For what you have currently, how you describe your needs, and how much improvement the box will be, you're the poster child for the HF 44 box. I'd wait for a good sale/coupon price, and buy it without even looking at anything else, unless you find a lowball deal on a great quality box on CL for less than the HF.

It would probably be many years, if ever before you'd outgrow a HF 44.

If you consider the long term this could be a good choice, could last a lifetime. Check the videos below. One thing I see with the HF boxes are drawers you would keep wrenches / screw drivers etc. are too deep, you have 2" of dead air space above shallow items giving less efficient use of box capacity, I mention that in the review video.

I'd suggest checking CL if you're in an area where good quality used boxes come up for sale. If that's not really the case, I agree with the other poster, the HF 44" box is made for you.

I started with the hf 44" box top and bottom and it was a very descent box for the money. Then a guy offered me a kr1000 for 350.00 it's so much deeper I really like it. I've learned that if you are patient the right deal always comes along.

Think about the biggest box you think you might go into and then get a bigger one.

There is not much that ***** more than out growing toolbox after tool box. ( ask me how I know ... ) Even if its a H.F. you are going to be dumping some coin into that. You want it to be the last time you do that.

I agree with the HF 44. I upgraded from the CM "Heavy Duty" 26". I kept the CM box for my duplicates and stuff that I don't use often. The quality is much better than the Craftsman Heavy Duty boxes. The only thing I wish the HF 44 had is deeper drawers. I considered going to the HF 56, but the 44 was in my price point.
