So the shower head arm is separated from the pipes? You probably will have to tear a hole in the wall behind the shower to fix that on the pipe side not the shower side.

Seems you have two options if I understand that you have a leaking pipe in the wall leading up to the shower.
1) tear into it from the shower side.
2) tear into it from the other side.

Option 2 may be easier if you have tile or some type of surround that would be hard to patch. If the other side has drywall or something easier to patch, use that to get access. There is no good answer to your problem.

Can you post a picture of INSIDE the hole where the shower head arm goes into the wall?

Did the shower are just come unthreaded or rust and rot through?

Having fixed MANY of these situations, I need more info in order to help.

Pictures will be of the most help.

It could have come unthreaded... Take a look in the hole. There is an elbow at the top with threads.
