Hey guys,
Not sure if this appropriate here or not, but I need a puller to remove and insall the pully on my A/C compressor for a '71 Ford. All I can see is a threaded hole in the center of the pully. I have no idea how to get it off and put it back on. Any help you guys can lend would be greatly appreicated. And if it leads to a tool purchase I'll post the pics here ;)

Its been a lot of years since I've done that but you probably have a York compressor.

What you need would be in this kit. OTC4535 - 13 pc A/C Clutch Hub Remover & Installer

Its possible they may be available at your local part stores as loaners or as a rental.

That kit seems to be on sale at quite a few online sites. The one I linked to may not be the best price, just the first I came to.

Usually, the place that you bought the pump from will put it on for you
or loan you a tool that will do the job!

If it's a york you don't need a puller. You can use a 5/8 bolt. Just thread it through the hole in the center and as you tighten it the pulley will come right off. To re-install just use the bolt w/washer that is on it right now.

BTW, I tried an actual puller once for this application and promptly broke it. The bolt trick is easier , cheaper, and quicker. I've used this method on three different york compressors. If you have an impact it use it but this method can be used without air tools.

Ford used the GM air condition compressor on some models. A picture of the compressor might help to determine what too you will need...

if you read the factory shop manual, the bolt method is correct.
the one catch is that is is a special bolt. then ebd should be ground flat as most bolts with a rolled thread have a bur ring on the end that can mark up the end of the shaft. 30 sec at the grinder or belt sander and that is fixed.
SO use to sell a special AC clutch remover that was a bolt with the end ground flat.

ford manual procedure
1 disconnect wires going to the brushes
2 remove clutch retaining bolt and install special bolt
3 jumper wires to the battery (this will hold the compressor from turning)
4 using wrench or ratchet turn special bolt to release clutch from tapered shaft
5 disconnect jumper wires from battery
6 etc

Hey guys,
Thanks for the responses. Yes, It looks like a 5/8" bolt may actually work - although the OTC kit looks nice. FWIW there is no bolt in the center hole so I'm not sure how it would go back on, but we can figure that out later. here is a pic of the clutch:

I was just going to get the compressor from Napa parts on line. They were the cheapest at 175.00 I'm not sure if I should just go to the store, I hate dealing with those numbskulls...

ps, this is the compressor:

why do you need to buy the compressor for $175
do you not have one or do you just need to rebuild yours?
unless yours is junk, I would look into buying the valve plate, and seal kit and redo it yourself.
the rings rairly go bad and if they do the body is generally bas as well
if the shaft seal is not leaking then leave it alone otherwise you can replace it as well

I have spare compressors if you need

Are you sure there isn't a snap ring buried down in the center of that clutch holding it to the shaft? :headscrat

You can also ship it to Classic Air in Tampa Florida, and it will come back looking like new. You will also need a replacement for the receiver dryer, and they can rebuild your old one to look and work like new. Good folks to work with on old car air conditioning.. They did my compressor and dryer about 10 years ago..

Hello Bob,
That is exactly what I have decided to do, I think LOL. First of all the 5/8 bolt did the trick. I found a seal kit on "click on autoparts.com" 20 bucks so I figured what the heck. It was the original compressor I took off the car maybe 18 years ago and it seemed frozen now. I took the back plate off and tapped the crank with a brass drift and hammer and it freed right up.

Here is a really silly question, but what type of socket do I need for this bolt?
0_IMAGE_291.jpg
I don't own any 12pt sockets, I presume that's what I need, but I never saw fasteners like this before.

I do need all the rubber parts and hoses under the hood, I chucked them way back not realizing I'd really need them now. But even worse I chucked the schrader type valves that screw on to the comressor head. So if you have any of those parts I will gladly purchase them from you.
Thanks for the help guys.

If you decide to tackle it; here are some manuals to rebuild the "york" a/c compressors:

Wow,
That is awsome, thanks a bunch man. I'll give it a shot, I'm not going to fool with the crank seal as it seems to be fine. Does anyone know if I can use current refigerant with the standard seals in the compressor, or do I have to find Freon?
I also called classic auto air, seem like nice folks - I'll give them a call if this doesn't work.
Kind regards,
Rick

Looks like you just need a standard "12 pont" socket to get those bolts off...
