Need a recommendation for a small torx screwdriver

I've got a repair to make that requires a T5 torx screwdriver. I have a 15-20 year old set of Craftsman watchmakers style screwdrivers that only goes down as far as T6. Does anyone here have any brands they would recommend, or avoid?

The Craftsman quality on the set I have has been satisfactory for the light work it gets used for. I'm willing to consider singles or sets.

I've got the Craftsman mini set which includes a T5 driver, and they've all been fine. I think the set of five was $10 at Sears.

That said, you only need the T5. Maybe consider buying a Wiha T5. The Wiha precision drivers are high quality.

I really like the PB Swiss with the swiss grip handle, nice grippy and comfortable, it's not pencil thin like regular precision screwdrivers. Only downside is that it does not have the finger spinner on the end. They go down to T3.

In terms of quality...

1. PB Swiss
2. Wiha

I've both brands, and PB Swiss is definitely better made (and you definitely pay for it). But if it's for a one-off repair, I'd say Wiha hands down (they have more small/precision screwdriver profiles than any other quality brand, so for more specialized profiles, they're likely to be the only quality choice available).

Wera makes good stuff too as I understand it, but keep in mind the grips aren't for everyone.

+1 on Husky especially since you said it's a one-off job. I've used mine on many jobs and they work fine.

PB Swiss, Wiha, Wera, Felo...all will be great. Pick the one that appeals to you most. :D

I have both Wiha and Wera in the precision sizes, and I find the Wera more comfortable to use. I am too scared to buy PB Swiss because I don't want to be dissatisfied with all of my current drivers!

For torx, mid-range EU stuff is the best. pick something german you'll be fine. Keep in mind shipping costs are relevant. that rules out PB swiss and Apex or zephyr etc if buying small lots.

Wiha hands down offers best range of sizes and quality with precision drivers get dedicated drivers not bits it helps since this screws do not like torque a cross threads delicate circuit boards

I have at least half a dozen sets that have a T5 in them and I'm sure any one of them will do fine for any given task. But.

For anything smaller than T10 if you are buying a new tool I think the best money you can spend is Wiha unless you need some specialty size or set they don't offer. The smaller torx drivers round a lot faster than the bigger ones, and more than equivalent size phillips.

Might look at getting a kit of phone tools that has T5 and several of the other teensy oddball drivers needed for working on modern machinery.

They also sell kits with various plastic prybars, spudgers, etc. needed for meddling with the innards of things you're not supposed to meddle with.

That's right! Why do I always forget about Moody?

what the PB Swiss swiss grip looks like in comparison to a typical precision driver. I didn't have a T5 in the craftsman but you get the idea. The handle is really great and you can get a lot of torque as compared to a precision driver to break fasteners loose.

Also grabbed that Husky at Home Depot, it is a 6 or 8 in one kind of deal. I've used it just for knives and have been happy for the price.

Moody would be another US made alternative.

IMHO Moody is "dollar store" quality. Wiha and Wera are far superior.

Wera doesn't offer as many precision screwdrivers as Wiha but I really like the feel better. The little hump in the Wera handle acts like a torque amplifier.

I used the Craftsman mini-drivers for years when I was working on computers and the like. I still have them (at least the ones I haven't lost!) and never recall breaking the tips on any of them. Current ones actually appear to be a little better made than their older ones, and are still US made.

All my precision drivers are Wera. I bought them off KCtool. Wera makes every size from T5 up in both "precision style" screwdrivers with the spin cap, and regular style ones too.

Here's an Amazon link.

There's a drop down menu to select any size, and the T5 is $5. Their "IP" part number indicates Torx Plus, and their "BO" part number indicates security Torx.

I agree the Wihas are a bit better (no Wera), but they're not dollar store **** either.

I only have a 58-0405 JIS set, but they're well machined and they've not destroyed any fasteners nor is there any damage to the drivers (set = #1, #0, #00, #000). FWIW, Vessel doesn't even offer a #000 (brand I originally sought).

As per getting more torque on precision screwdrivers, I use a lot of Wiha Drive-Loc (both 6mm & 4mm systems).
