MSC sells pads for some clamps. On some of mine I have a cut a pad from square or round stock, drilled a hole part way through it to just slip over the ball and then peined it to keep it from falling off.

I have one bookmarked there, but my clamp pad ball ID is between sizes, do I order up or down.

I respect trying to repair any old tool... but you'd pay less for a good example on ebay than any parts.

Those replacement pads snap into place and take a significant amount of force to snap them on. I've aways squeezed them on using a bar clamp. I'm not saying you can't do it with a hammer; I'm just saying is I've always squeezed them on.
