I have a driveway gate that spans 12.5' total.

There is a 4' section for the 'people' and an 8' that I can swing open (pinned by a stake in the concrete and supported on two wheels).

This is a picture of it (sortof...)..you can see the larger section and a bit of the smaller in the left side of the pic...http://30moons.com/images/Garage/FENCE.JPG

I don't know if going to 1/2" fence slats would make a difference. The people gate is attached to the the house via a 2x4 and hinges like the larger side.

It's needs to be a privacy fence.

I just got a dog http://30moons.com/images/oggie/oggie5.jpg and the set up now is no good for Hanzo.

We needed a 20' fence at my parents house so they could get their pop up camper in the back and out of sight (covenance bs) I used 2x4x1/4 for the corners concreted in 1.5', filled with concete. Add a goo hinge design and gates made of 2x4x.120 with 1x1x.120 bracing and we have a 16' and 4' span. Both have not had any sag problems, even with a privacy fence covering the metal. For the corners we cut fence posts in half and tacked it on the outside.

If I was to do it again and it needed to be opened often I would have used trailer spindles for hinges instead of tube with a brass bushing tube with a bolt thru.

Think about a sliding gate instead of a swinging gate if you have the room to the side.
They have a lot less stress on the posts.
And if you put a wheel under the far end, no stress at all.

I agree that you make your gates with a steel frame and also agree that on long gates a caster under the outer end works well. This is a picture of one of the gates I made for the front courtyard. It has a steel frame and is sheathed with panel siding ( can't remember the designation for it). The siding is attached with sheetmetal screws and construction adhesive, very rigid but on the heavy side. I also put bronze bushings in the hinge points because I don't plan on having to re-do these anytime soon.
