Same situation as you replacing a 10' x 24' shed last December. I moved the old shed over to the other side of the yard my self using couple jacks ,block and tackle and the Wifes Envoy.

Ended up cutting it down to 10x 10 after new build.

I'd rent a storage unit.....But that's me
I'd rather not have my stuff in something like that if I value my stuff

I’ve got my attached garage that houses my tools and anything nice.

This is more for riding mower, sporting equipment and such.

Funny Im going through the same thing right now. I need a place to put my car and a few other things while I build my garage. I priced out PODS and storage place around the corner. For a 10x20 it was 200 for the month at the storage place or 200 for PODS plus 75 delivery and 75 pick up. Im going to go with the storage place, I dont want to risk any damage to my car. GL!

If I do build a new larger garage, I was thinking about just building over the top of what I have now then tearing the old one down. The problem I see is the floor.

Those temp canopies hold up, generally, for a few months. Security, moisture, hassle, etc are factors. I even had a rather awesome, heavy duty 20x20 canopy at one point. For basically intercepting most of the rain that will fall, I guess they are okay. I did use one in the 90s to paint a car in my folks’ back yard & ironically it turned out great.

Consider me not impressed with those fabric canopies. It's hard to anchor the feet well for a sail that big, even in moderate wind areas. Pretty much any animal that wants will be roaming in & out of it at will. Security is nonexistent for theft.

My initial thought was to chime in with the rent a PODS unit or shipping container thought, but maybe there's a better solution. Not sure what the logistics are on your property, but why not build a shed before the garage? After you're done, you have a shed for the mower, yard tools, and sporting equipment, plus you get more usable space in the garage. I can't imagine that there's any way you would regret having the shed later.

Fenced in backyard, tight neighbors, 3 doors down from the police station.

I do want to build a 500sqft detached after this 1,000sqft attached and contemplated doing it first, but my fear is that I’ll get comfortable and push it off.

If you are in Virginia Beach I'd agree with the sea land container. A 20' x 8' shipping container should fit in easy and be useful after the garage is built.
You can always put siding on the outside.

I had one with mesh sides, I set up over a 1950 chevy I was working on just to keep most of the rain off and give me shade in the summer. It ended up being there nearly a year. I threw it away after I got the truck running and driving mainly because I didnt want to try to store it somewhere.

I would say for a 6 month option of keeping your stuff covered it would work as intended

The canopy should work as a temporary solution, unless you have high winds. A few days of high winds tore mine up.

I'm going through the same process waiting to build a shed. Got my stuff in a 10' x10' HF Garage tent that I threw a heavy duty tarp over for extra UV protection. Seems like a pretty sturdy set up. I put PT deck boards under the perimeter and bolted the frame to them, then weighted them down with heavy pavers. Not blowing anywhere.

I've been using the HF tents for a while now, trying to get the house finished.

Plastic underneath, and I've scabbed together a "floor" with old pallets and plywood scrap.

They work OK--you do get condensation, and they don't last (and HF no longer sells the covers separately), but I have replaced the covers on the two I'm using and just tossed the new framing.

Even replacing them every couple of years, I'm miles ahead of any kind of rental storage.

Hopefully, this is the year for building a permanent shed (which takes care of most of the contents of one).

I built a false front facing prevailing wind. It makes a huge difference protecting cover from early wear and tear. 2 6” posts 4’ into ground with plywood doors:thumbup:

I worked out of a 10x20 Costco car tent and a 20' sea container (rental) for the last 4 years while we got the $ together to build our shop. Both were placed on an existing concrete slab (motorhome parking spot), the car tent was secured using the provided concrete anchors.

Had to replace the top on the car tent once in that time period and the top of the sea container is starting to rust. Damn thing is still here, working on cleaning it out so it can go away as I type this.
