need a torx master set

im looking for a set of torx sockets, i already have E torx but its time for a master set of great torx sockets. tamper proof is a must. part numbers would be great

My brother bought a Matco Silver Eagle set (offshore); it is similar to this one but with the additional hex, female torx etc. They have held up pretty well; our truck guy said he would warranty them even if used with a impact, so my brother does (all drivers may not do this).... needless to say they have been warranted because of this. More affordable then snapon/matco USA stuff but more then some of the non truck brands...

If you are doing some high torque stuff; you might consider getting a used set of usa snap-on for the specific types you use in the high stress work, they really seem to hold up better then most. Look at pages 52 to 54; They have some gold colored bit sockets that specifically high strength for the heavy applications; not cheap but very good:

VIM is the supplier to Cornwell and probably MAC as well. Very good bits [S2 steel] and probably the best quality to dollar ratio you'll find. Products are manufactured in Taiwan [to a high degree of quality], but also look at the savings.

i will be doing auto and motorcycle work with these. i have a husky set now but its falling apart and its time to upgrade. the OTC and VIM sets come with E torx which i already have but they look great for the money. i know the snap on set is proven, any other experience with the silver eagle set?

IMO for torx/hex/xzn, Snap-On is the best, but VIM is the best value. My most used stuff is Snap-On (regular torx and metric hex), and all the rest is VIM or Blue Point.

I'll never get rid of the Snap-On sets, but if I had all my stuff stolen, I'd probably replace it with VIM because it's so good for the price.

Silver Eagle is all imported, probably made at the same factory the VIM stuff is. I'd only consider a truck brand for warranty. If you dont have a truck that regularly stops by i wouldnt even consider that a benefit. Breaking an often used bit socket only to have to wait a week or two isnt going to help much.

That VIM set looks like a killer value. I doubt you could even cobble together the same bits at Harbor Freight for less than the $56 they want for that set.

student discount can get me the snap on gold set for like 110$ and the new torx trays are great if that does anything for you. where is VIM made? just realized the snap on set isnt tamper proof

That being said I can't believe Snap-On wants $700+ for theirs. That is ridiculous. Almost seems like Snap-On sells to the US Government, so they way overprice their product, then "discount" for the US Gov, and still make obscene amounts of money. I wonder who Snap-Ons largest customer is...guessing the US Gov.

Taiwan. Only sets of US origin i'm aware of are Snap-On, Matco and Craftsman [at least last time i checked]. Oh and lisle, but they have all the strength of cheese these days.

Blue-Point, MAC, Matco Silver Eagle, Cornwell all imported.

This is just COO though, doesnt mean the US sets are better or worse than the imports.

Yes, the regulars are much stronger. Tamper proof is used in places that don't require a lot of torque. You'll snap the tip right off trying to use one in a higher torque place where some regular torx fasteners are found.

In general I find no good reason to use tamper-proof bits when not necessary. Some of the typical applications of Torx I run into are fasteners that are seized and I'm not willing to risk breaking a tamper-proof bit just because I was too cheap to buy a good quality regular bit. For example, the rotor retaining bolts on BMW, MINI and others. The torque spec isn't high, but by the time those fasteners are first removed, they've often almost become one with the hub.

The VIM TMS34PF set is a very good set and won't break the bank. Their one-piece half-cut Torx sets are also very good quality for the money. Seems like I've posted this picture a lot lately. Click for larger version.

Most of the tool truck sets are rebranded OTC.
