I found a place on the web selling new Wilton #11104 vices.

Ad say's they are made of steel, but is it really and not ductile or cast iron??

I want something I can "mildly" beat on with a medium sized ballpein hammer if I want to so will it take a beating??

I would dearly love to have another small jawed post vice, but people seem to think a lot of them. I had one when I was a kid, only gave $5.00 for it..

Please advise and Thx. in advance.

Craigslist yo. You can find some good stuff on craigslist if you look, too much for my tastes but I am cheap, I got my dunlap vise for $3.

I've never seen an actual cast steel vise, because they'd be expensive to cast and more expensive to machine. There are numerous phoney-baloney terms for ductile or malleable cast iron. Remember when GM called their cast iron rods and crankshafts "Armasteel".

Yes, most any US-made vise will withstand having the workpiece "mildy" beat on with a medium hammer.

No, in fifty years I've never broken a good-quality vise.

Maybe, accept GJ vise hoarding has driven up prices. Not many $3-$5 vises today.

The Wilton you're looking at is a Chinese made import Wilton. Stay away, it's junk. If you want to hammer on it then especially stay away.

It's a truly awful vise.

Where do you live so we can check your local Craig's List for you? You're definitely going to want to buy an older vise that was manufactured in N. America, Europe, Australia and sometimes Japan.
