I'm new here and appreciate any help I can get. I have a 40X80 building with 40x60 of that finished and insulated. The back 20x40 portion is unfinished and will stay that way. Inside the insulated 40x60 is a workshop area that is 10X40. I have in floor heat. The ceilings are 12 ft in the open area and 8 ft in the workshop. I have 12" of blown in insulation in the ceiling and walls are 8" and also insulated. 1 insulated 12 ft wide overhead door, 1 insulated 12 ft slide style door, and the small walk in door to the workshop. 4 small windows that I block off in summer with insulation to keep sun out. It doesn't get miserable hot but I want AC. Currently its 92 outside and 78-80 inside. My son in law has a Pioneer split and it works well for him, but his shop is much smaller than mine. Can you give me an idea what I would need and what combination of Pioneer units would work for me? I know zero about this stuff!!

Thanks, Steve

What you need is a "load calculation" for the part of the country you are in. Look for that, and you will need to enter the dimensions you have, the insulation and the openings such as windows. That will yield a number in BTU - 12000 BTU is 1 ton. Take that measure, my guess of the top of my head is that it may just be in the range of 2 ton +/- 1/2. Then shop for a mini-split with that spec. Many of them are also heat pumps, which you may or not need depending on the heat you already have. These mini-splits are amazing in that they technology in far above your average home AC unit - and can offer 21 SEER at a very competitive price. All the best.

Thanks. Yes, I did that online and it said 77,000 BTU cooling. That's why I need someone who knows what they are talking about!

Are you wanting to cool the 40 x 60 area , or just the shop 10 x 40 ? Radiant heat is fantastic , and a Mini Split system can compliment that . Thats a big room to heat by Mini Split's only . 400 sq. ft. in the shop 1 ton might do fine , but the 40 ft. length of that could be problematic . A fan down low near the cool slab to move the air would help . Mini's have little fans . If you are cooling 2400 sq. ft. , you'll need 3 ton / 36000 btu or more , I'm guessing . I'd consider 2 separate units . A pair of 18,000 btu units might not be enough . Got a budget limit ?

I think I'm going with 2 24000s for the main area and a separate 12000 for the smaller shop. I contacted Pioneer and that's what they recommended.
