Need advice on garage door spring

Hello,
I need to remove the brackets that old the garage door opener and the spring tentionner to fix the wall behind, can I just take the tention of the spring and remove the 2 bracket so I can fit a 2x10 in there.

Yes, but be extra careful when taking the tension off the spring. Begin by placing a pair of vise grips on the shaft to retain tension on the cables before you release the tension on the spring. Get a piece of chalk and draw a straight line across the width of the spring. When you retension the spring the line will show you when you have brought it back to the original tension. Make sure the spring torsion bars you use to unwind the spring fit without any slop in the holes of the spring's winding cone. Don't stand in line with the bars when unwinding and rewinding the spring.

Be careful. My co worker tried to adjust the spring, slipped, broke his hand and spent about $500 at the E.R. Then the next day he called the garage door guy....

I like to count the number of 1/4 turns that it takes to unwind the spring, like the idea of painting a straight mark though :)

My boss is missing a thumb, from trying to unwind a garage spring. Be very careful.

Ok thaks for the advices I saw some videos on youtube ,it can leave good marks lol !
