Need advice on how to remove quill/spindle from drill press

Canadian Buffalo No 18 drill press

It is time to tear down the DP head, I'm pretty sure there is a razor sharp spring in the cup on the end of the pinion shaft waiting to fly all over the shop so I thought I would ask for advise on the best practice to disassemble.
I loosened the Allen screw on the end of the pinion shaft and it spun counter clockwise a couple of times.
