I need to run a gas line to my detached garage to feed a 60-75K BTU Mr. Heater-type overhead heater (not purchased yet). Does anyone know what size and type gas line I should use - the run will probably be around 120'. I plan on doing the grunt work myself and then have a heating guy do the final hook-up.

Thanks.

Search around. There are lots of gas pipe sizing calculators like this one. At minimum you'll need to know the BTU of the heater you're purchasing, or it's requirements in cubic feet/hour.

If you are just extending it from your house's regulated line, I'd probably run 3/4" due to the length of run. You could reduce it to 1/2" once it enters the garage.

It will have to be 3/4 inch pipe or you will not get the gas flow needed for a 75K heater over that distance. I had to run 1" pipe to cover 130 feet supplying a 100k heater, as per the local gas company and an engineering friend of mine.
