Need Advice on Technique for VCT

I have a small bathroom in my garage that I want to put vinyl tile down. How do I mark for cutting the squares so it goes around the curved sections of the toilet? What is the best known method?

what i always do in situations with tiling bathrooms, is place the tile you want to cut to fit on top of the closest full tile. then, using a piece of another tile the full size as a "length gauge" i drag it around the toilet or other obstacle keeping it parallel with your tile with a pen marking the tile underneath.

Wouldn't it make more sense to just pull the toilet, run the tile up to the flange and then set the toilet on top of the tile?

I agree, the reason my drawing is a circle is that I've always done it by pulling the toilet, and using my method to cut a circle up to the flange, not the perimeter of the toilet.

I assumed that would be the goal here, but the method should still work if not.

I'd pull the toilet as well - they you can make crappy cuts. Get it?...crappy cuts...

However, if that's not an option, you can use a compass and scribe the base of the toilet. Just offset the tile the same amount as the compass is open.

Unless there's a real strong compelling reason not to - pull the toilet.

If you live in a real old house sometimes what should be a simple job, like pulling a toilet, can turn into a major project as one action uncovers, or creates, another problem, and another one, and another one...
