Are you going to have a mortgage?
If so, ask your bank to recommend a lawyer.
It is their money, they will want to be sure everything is in order.

Advice about what, exactly?

I'd start with a trusted real estate agent, pay him/her a bit for their time and ask for an education. A lawyer who deals with real estate transfers would be your next pace for information.

If you are buying property, you will want to have your own lawyer make sure all is properly done. Real estate transfers are not a good DYI project.

In New York, realtors don't get nearly as involved in the escrow/title aspects as they do in some other states... you'll need a lawyer for the closing, so you'd might as well find one now.
