Hey gang, this group seems to be the best go-to spot for all things, as we have a broad talent pool here.
I don’t know if I should be looking to different forum, but I need some help with my WiFi setup, so I can get back into my shop.
I previously had a small netgear extender. One end plugged in in the house, and one in the garage. That gave me a signal out in my detached metal shop. It has failed, and I think the modem is failing as well.
We have Frontier dsl as it’s all that’s available in our area. No gaming, but we watch a lot of hockey. It is constantly stopping, blurred screen, etc..., especially when 4 kids all want to stream “Slow mo guys, or Rooster teeth”.

Looking for solutions to put my modem into bridge mode (so I’ve read), and add a router. If it doesn’t have the power to get out to the shop, the another “extender” of some kind.

So, where do I turn? Forums? Private networking guy? I can not STAND dealing with Best Buy, so if that’s my only option, I’ll get a library card and read more...

Thanks!

I haven’t used them, but the “router and mesh WiFi in a box” units seem to do well. I’m talking Google WiFi, ubi, and there’s a Unifi version as well. Check out some reviews and it’s basically 2-3 boxes that handle everything.

If you want to get all fancy you can do a “real” network but based on your post I’d strongly lean towards the “all in one” router/mesh deals.

If you can wait, Black Friday night save you a few bucks or just watch for a sale.

I think you should break down and isolate your problem(sssss), I think that is your best bet instead of trying to go all over the places with all sort of suggestions you will be getting.

1) get your devices connected without a conflict... get your extender working in unison with your router....including making sure the DHCP server is disabled on the extenders....
2) resolve speed issue , if it is your bandwidth problem like your kids sucking up all the bandwidth with streaming what ever kdis do these days, or you are getting some sort radio interference from neighbor or government mind control rays....

Devices connect, not an issue...
Extender has evidently just plain failed...
No router- just a modem. Connection just goes to hell all the time. We live in the middle of nowhere, not much in the house, interference shouldn’t be an issue. Just the same provider sponsored problems well known to their frontier customers.
Bandwidth is an unavoidable issue. But I’ve heard of other customers improving it with better equipment.

Thanks-

Its all dependent on whether you can get a signal into your shop from your house. My shop is about 60 feet from the house and is all metal and acts like a faraday cage. I didn't bother trying to extend or anything like that. I just ran cat6 and will put another router out in the shop and its gateway will be my router in the house. WIFI in the shop will be flawless with a 1g connection back to the house.

You have a router in your house, if you didn't you would have one IP and only one device could get out of the house to the net. Your modem is probably an all in one device (plain modems do not offer DHCP or WIFI).

Here is what I would do. I would call frontier and ask them if they allow you to use your own modem. If so look into these:

https://www.actiontec.com/wifi-routers-gateways/

I don't have DSL but this is what all the hackers and security freaks seem to be using that do have DSL, at least that is what I've read in a few security articles.

That can clear up issues caused by the junk routers the ISP's provide (I have cable and replaced my modem and router with my own gear, major improvement streaming tv was almost unwatchable on a 100Mb link). Plus those routers are not secure and ISP employees can snoop. They cannot with my setup, at least beyond what killing net neutrality now allows them to do legally...

After replacing that I would then look at an extender, running cat6 to the shop, etc. In fact I would try this and then try your netgear extender and see if it clears up. If not replace the extender with one of the options I listed above.

Good luck

LOL even in the middle of no where there are goberment mind control beams interference... Never a fan of netgear or D-link stuff.... always an Asus or Linksys fan... but either case... trouble shooting is the same, don't dismiss it before you have actually verify it your self...

with DSL... there is the thing about the interference from the phone line it self if you still have the land line... I think.. it used to that you have to install a filter on each phone... not sure the newer xDSL now...

as far as wifi... unless you have one dedicated computer only or your ISP is leasing you a real IP for every device, every home/small business setup uses NAT.. via a router setup... it might be separate piece of equipment DSL Modem and WiFI router separate or could be a combination unit (Lease favorite iMO), so 99% chance you do have a WIFI router...

now the repeater... part... sometimes the repeater have DHCP server turned on, some times... and that might conflict with the main router's DHCP server... dependents who got hte priority, your devices will act wanky even with a full bar signal. things like this I am referring to...

You'll just have to take the problems to pieces and solve them one at a time... hard to tell with just those info over the web...

if you wanted new equipment... there are plenty of choices... How much do you have ?
