Need Barn Pics

Here's the deal. I live in town and I have lots of restrictions as far as what I can do. So, I can only build about a 18x24 shop/barn. My house is over 100 years old, so it MUST look period to the house. I want a 1 and 1/2 story style barn. Lower concrete for a car and woodworking and upstairs storage. Any help would work.

Two quick questions:

Where are you and what is the ballpark budget?

I know of a few sources for barn type plans and timber frame barn builders. Problem is that you pretty much have to be in the northeast for the builders to be cost effective - I know for a fact that one of them charges you for the building plus their crews transportation, lodging, and meals. Gets expensive in a hurry.

Barn in my mother's pad.

The house was built around 1920, its had a mess of additions, but it still looks like a farmhouse. It's all in Elgin, Texas BTW.

I can get you some bigger pictures, and a floorplan if you like. Its about 3 stories tall, VERY BIG, prolly 150 ft long. Neat piece of architecture.

It is over 120' long, by about 80 or 90 feet wide. Probably not much bigger than mellowdave's barn, but the perspective of that first pic is pretty good.

The "chimney" as you call it is a 30' diameter 80' tall cement silo.

The "swimming pool" is a water trough for the cattle that used to live in the barn (and ate the silage that was stored in the silo).

Silo,you mean for like missiles? Just funnin ya BR. I grew up in Ohio near
Firestone Farms. Harvey hired famous race driver of the day Barney Oldfield
to drive his first rubber tired tractor into town at an astonishing 14 mph.
Had a barn similar to yours that we called our own as kids. Farmhouse had
been gutted by fire so we had quite the hangout plus a killer rope swing.
Those were good times. No barns at all in this neck of the woods tho.
Had to throw that post up here just to make you smile.

Do you have height restrictions as well? A hip roof would give you more room on the second floor.

My advice is go full 2 story... 1.5 loss of space to roof is huge... while cost to go full 2 is minimal.
(2) windows 2'x2' (four pane) on each side of 2nd story. 3 garage doors down and entry door downstairs...
I put a barn-slider door on the second floor that allows me to stand in my truck bed and place boards up onto 2nd floor woodshop floor. (Behind this slider, I have a weather tite double door that open inward... outside you see the old looking barn slider).

Match house color and shingle color and style and it will fit right in.
