I am looking for some recommendations on a chain wrench to replace the el-cheapo one that fell apart when I was tring to hold onto a crankshaft pulley to remove the pulley bolt. Please note that I did cushion the pulley to not damage it, as called out in the manual.

I am a DIY home mechanic (not pro).

Thanks.

I have an older JH Williams chain wrench that is very nice.

When an impact wrench will not fit to remove a crank pulley bolt, I have always had good results bracing a breaker bar against the frame or the ground and tapping the starter motor to crack loose the bolt.

I broke the bolt loose by wrapping an old serpentine belt around the pulley and pinching the 2 belt ends with vice grips. The vice grips then jambed itself between an adjacent pulley. Then I used a jack stand to support the extension attached to a long 1/2" drive SO breaker bar. With all my friends 280+ lb weight the nut broke free. I was surprised the Craftsman extension didn't break. Actually the old belt with Vice grips probably worked out better than a chain wrench. I will get a good chain wrench though. Thanks for the recommendations.

How about a heavy strap wrench? The rubber or strapping would be less likely to cause damage.
