Need Delta Miter Saw Blade Guard

I have a Delta 10 inch miter saw, model 34-080. A couple years ago I broke the plastic blade guard. A piece of wood kicked back and somehow it flew out and broke the blade guard. I was always going to buy one, but never did get around to ordering one. Well, I have been trying to order one for a few days now, but I can't find a part number for it.

I did find one web site that had the whole thing, the metal guard piece and the plastic part, but I don't need that big metal part, I just need the plastic piece. If the whole thing was priced sensibly I would order it, but they want $112 for the whole thing and all I want is the plastic part.

Anyone have an idea how to go about this? I was thinking that maybe I could fabricate one from Lexon plexiglass, but that involve doing a lot of screwing around. I would rather just buy one, but paying $112 for stuff I don't need just to get the one item I do need, for some reason just rubs me the wrong way. Making one would not be my first choice, but it may turn out to be the only option available other than biting the bullet and paying the $112 for the whole assembly. I am hoping you guys have a really good solution to suggest.

Not sage advice for sure, and I use my equipment professionally, but all my tools including my skilsaw's have the guards removed, and I myself find them safer without, but it's because I'm used to it.

I would give delta customer service a call and see it your part is available by itself. Strange that the piece is not available by itself

Wow, amazing levels of intelligence in this thread... No seatbelt and proud of it?

Anyway, have you found a manual for the saw? If they don't list the guard as a separate piece, you will probably be out of luck unless you can somehow find a non functioning saw that is being parted out.

Looking at pictures online, there is no way i would spend $112 on that saw. You can get a new 10" saw for not a lot more or a more modern, used one for the same or less

No way I would use a miter saw without a guard. And I really can't come up with a scenario when it has gotten in the way either.

Now I don't use one on a table saw because of the complexity of cuts.

Agreed. And 99% of the tablesaw work I do is fine with a guard and riving knife, and it takes only a second to remove either/both and store.

I bought the saw in the early 80's not too long after the wife and I bought the house we live in now. It was quite expensive at the time, but it was Delta's professional model and it was really heavy duty. I mounted the saw on a metal stand and it has worked great all these years.

About 10 years ago I bought a DeWalt 12 inch sliding miter saw and for the most part I have been using it rather than the DeWalt saw. But, on occasion I use the DeWalt to cut up some old junk wood so my grandson can take it to a friend's house and they have a bonfire at night. While cutting up some junk wood I managed to break the guard when a piece of wood kicked back and hit the plastic guard in just the right way and broke it.

Anyway, it is a really nice saw and I hate to not use it, but without a guard I just don't feel all that comfortable using it.

I have no idea where the owners manual is, normally I keep all manuals in a filing cabinet in the basement, but for some reason I can't find this one. I went online to the Delta web site and I found the right model number. They have a parts list for the model I have, but they don't list the plastic guard.

OK, went to the site and checked it out. Got both part numbers for the guard and then went to the Delta parts site to see if they are still being made. Turns out both part number are discontinued. Well, the one part number 1313189 was changed to 1313370 but that number has been discontinued as well.

It would seem that I am out of luck in-so-far as buying a new safety guard. Possibly I could get one from a saw that quit working, provided it was still in good shape and not broke.

Might be worth throwing up a wanted ad on craigslist, so many people remove the guards anyway so they may have a new one laying around.

Unfortunately my 30+ year old Delta miter box smoked the armature 2 years ago. I saved the parts for 20 months too good the throw away.........but..........pitched them 60 days back in shop cleanup. Sorry........

Yes that thing is ( was) heavy.

Apparently I should have started this thread about 3 months ago, before you got rid of the one you had.

It definitely is heavy, but I use it mostly in the shop so moving it around isn't an issue. Also, the saw works so well I hate to get rid of it.

Not crazy. Intelligent. Using a miter saw without a guard is stupid. There's too much exposed blade and the guards simply don't get in the way. Table saws are a completely different animal as you can control blade height.

My old Delta compound miter saw needed a new blade guard a few years ago, and I too found that it was a discontinued item. I fabricated a replacement guard out of sheet metal that is still in service.

I run equipment with a stationary cutting blade (like a table saw or a router table) without the guard as it often obstructs my view, and I want to be able to see where not to put my hands. I also began using table saws in an era before they were equipped with guards. I still have all 10 fingers, and I think about that every time I turn on my table saw.

However, for equipment where the blade is moving like a compound miter saw, it is foolish to run the blade unguarded. The blade is running way to close to your belt buckle.
